Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt by stating a clear and consistent position in agreement with the statement. The response presents well-developed ideas regarding workforce productivity, employee well-being, and family cohesion. For example, the writer contrasts the negative impacts of long, grueling hours with trial program research showing enhanced focus and motivation under a four-day working week. The arguments are extended and supported effectively throughout the essay. The stance is maintained from the introduction through to the conclusion, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged coherently, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct theme (productivity and family/health). Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'The primary reason', 'Conversely', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate. However, minor mechanical errors in referencing and cohesion slightly disrupt the flow, such as missing articles and awkward transitions in places, placing this securely at a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The candidate demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for an academic discussion, attempting less common items such as 'grueling hours', 'mental fatigue', 'nuturing healthier individuals', and 'progressive step forward'. However, there are numerous spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'expertys', 'exctanding', 'productiviuty', 'imprtoving', 'woprkforce', 'operationl', 'deminished', 'finacial', and 'ffullfiling'. These inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band, though they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses ('The primary reason why a shorter work week is beneficial is that it boosts...'). There are frequent error-free sentences; however, persistent grammatical and punctuation errors occur, such as missing articles ('a four days work week', 'on public healtcare system'), incorrect prepositions ('spent bat the opffice'), and punctuation spacing issues. Despite these errors, the grammatical control is mostly sound and communication is not impeded, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
