Student answer (Band 6.0)

The decision to make working weeks shorter or longer will depend on various factors and different aspects resulting from this decision.

Firstly, the most employees in different workplaces are demanding less work hours per week. With this matter affecting a wide range of workers from all kinds of age groups, presidential candidates such as that of France are appealing to public by introducing reduction in work hours, such as one candidate's plan to shrink it to 45 hours per week from 60-70 hours per week. Modern people tend to value more their sense of purpose in life. By reducing their time spent in work for a company's goals, they have more time to spend on their personal goals. These objectives can vary from spending time with family, to travelling to new places and to establishing relations with new people. This trend is also portrayed in widspread topics such as "financial freedom" and "making money online while travelling around the world".

In addition to this, employees also want longer weekends. Some of them think that two days is no longer enough to refresh from a long week of stressful and long work. Thay are also actively holding new manifestations on the streets to influence enterprise and governmental policies regarding this matter. As work conditions are becoming harder, people are seeing themselves stuck in a vicious work-sleep cycle. They are also seeing themselves stuck in work routine all year round, with nothing else to do in the weekend apart from resting at home.

To summarize, I personally think that work hours should reduce, and companies should start integrate modern technology by laying off employees doing unessesarily stressful jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position on whether working weeks should be shorter and longer weekends implemented. The writer's position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are presented and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as referencing the working hours in France and the modern societal shift towards 'financial freedom' and personal fulfillment. While some supporting points could be further expanded for greater depth, the task is fully addressed and ideas are sufficiently developed to satisfy the requirements of a Band 6.5 or 7.0. The conclusion neatly reiterates the main argument and introduces a logical extension regarding technology and restructuring jobs, ensuring the response is well-rounded and cohesive in its purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is utilised effectively to separate introduction, main body points regarding employee demands and desires for longer weekends, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'In addition to this' are used to guide the reader through the arguments, though referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical, such as 'With this matter affecting a wide range...'. Paragraph topics are generally distinct, keeping the ideas structured and easy to follow. Overall, the coherence and cohesion reflect a solid command of structural progression, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'presidential candidates', 'vicious work-sleep cycle', and 'financial freedom'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text. For instance, 'the most employees' contains a redundant article, 'less work hours' should be 'fewer work hours', and 'widspread' contains a spelling error. Furthermore, the phrase 'holding new manifestations' is an unnatural translation or collocation; 'protests' or 'demonstrations' would be more appropriate. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The writer successfully employs subordinate clauses and conditional elements, such as 'By reducing their time spent in work...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and minor slips, including 'value more their sense of purpose' (incorrect word order), 'time spent in work' (inappropriate preposition), 'Thay are also actively holding' (spelling error), and 'start integrate' (missing infinitive marker 'to'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The presence of these recurring errors places the essay firmly within the Band 6 category.
