Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people thinks that working week should be shorter and a long weekend should be awarded to workers. I agree with this statement because a longer working week makes so much pressure on workers which effect their mental health. Similarly, shorter weekends are not enough for workers to spend a proper time with their families and friends.

A long working week needs to be shorter because it will effect the mental health of workers. Wher you are working six or seven days in a week, your sleep become disturbed. It also increase unnecessary pressure on the workers which ultimately leads to anxiety, depression. It also effects your overall health. The prime example is myself, I am working in a pharmacuetical industry where we work six or even seven days a week. My sleep cycle has been ruined and that's the reason, i am facing health issues now. It can also effects someone's social life.

When you are working for maximum days in a week, then you will have a shorter weekend and this short period of time is not enough to spend with your family or friends. At the end, your personal life is squeezing day by day and sometimes, it can lead to divorce. If we talk about example, then i am the perfect victim of it because i am working 7 days a week and that's why my father told me several time that you are not spending adequate time with us.

To conclude this, I think the working weeks should be reduced and weekends must be extended for a better and a healthy life of workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in agreement with shorter working weeks and longer weekends. The ideas presented focus on mental health, sleep disturbance, and personal/family relationships. While the position is clear throughout, the ideas are somewhat repetitious and under-developed, relying on personal anecdotes rather than broader societal or economic analysis. For instance, the mention of personal work conditions in a pharmaceutical industry is used twice to support different points. This meets the criteria for Band 6, where all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, but some development is repetitive or lacking in depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs with a clear overall structure including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, progression is sometimes hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak logical links. Cohesive devices are used, but they are basic and occasionally mechanical, such as 'Similarly', 'The prime example is myself', and 'If we talk about example'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas (mental health and social life), but referencing is occasionally unclear or repetitive, keeping the cohesion at a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with a mix of everyday words and some topic-related terms like 'mental health', 'anxiety', 'depression', and 'pharmaceutical industry'. However, there are notable limitations and word-choice errors, such as 'makes so main pressure' (creates/puts pressure), 'effect' instead of 'affect', and 'squeezing day by day'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but these inaccuracies in collocation and word form prevent the response from reaching a Band 7. The lexical range is sufficient to communicate the main points, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'When you are working six or seven days in a week...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('Some people thinks'), article usage ('in a week'), pronoun referencing ('someone's social life' followed by 'effects your'), and confusion between verbs and nouns ('effect' instead of 'affect'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but comma splices appear occasionally. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the grammar comfortably at Band 5.5, rounded to 5.5.
