Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people thinks that working week should be shorter and a long weekend should be awarded to workers. I agree with this statement because a longer working week build so much pressure on workers which affect their mental health. Similarly, shorter weekends are not enough for workers to spend proper time with their families and friends.

A long working week needs to be shorter because it will affect the mental health of workers. Wher you are working six or seven days in a week, your sleep becomes disturbed. It also increases unnecessary pressure on the workers which ultimately leads to anxiety, depression. It also effects your overall health. The prime example is myself, I am working in a pharmaceutical industry where we work six or even seven days a week. My sleep cycle has been ruined and that's the reason, i am facing health issues now. It can also effects someone's social life.

When you are working for maximum days in a week, then you will have a shorter weekend and this short period of time is not enough to spend with your family or friends. At the end, your personal life is squeezing day by day and sometimes, it can lead to divorce. If we talk about example, then i am the perfect victim of it because i am working 7 days a week and that's why my father told me several time that you are not spending adequate time with us.

To conclude this, I think the working week should be reduced and weekends must be extended for better and a healthy life of workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in agreement with the shorter working week and longer weekend. Main ideas regarding mental health, stress, and family time are introduced and supported with personal examples, such as working in the pharmaceutical industry and the feedback from the student's father. However, the development of ideas tends to rely heavily on personal anecdotes rather than broader societal or economic reasoning, and there is some repetition in how the points are framed. The position is clear throughout, aligning best with the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are addressed, though some ideas remain slightly under-developed or heavily reliant on personal experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Each body paragraph focuses on a distinct theme, namely mental health and social life. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'If we talk about example, then i am the perfect victim of it' sounds unnatural and lacks smooth integration. Paragraphing is used, but referencing pronouns such as 'it' and 'they' can be slightly ambiguous at times. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a Band 6 score, showing clear progression despite some mechanical cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to work, health, and family life. Less common vocabulary is attempted with phrases like 'sleep cycle has been ruined' and 'unnecessary pressure'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'Some people thinks' (grammatical slip affecting lexis) and 'personal life is squeezing day by day' instead of shrinking or deteriorating. Spelling is generally accurate, but occasional awkward phrasing and reliance on basic descriptive words limit the score to Band 5.5 or a solid Band 6 in terms of communicative success despite limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to handle subordinate clauses, as seen in 'When you are working for maximum days in a week, then you will have a shorter weekend.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Some people thinks'), missing articles ('in pharmaceutical industry'), incorrect capitalization of the pronoun 'i', and tense/form slips ('It can also effects'). Complex structures frequently contain errors. Because these errors do not severely impede overall communication, the writing aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors for grammar.
