Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some individuals believe that the number of working days per week ought to be reduced and employees should be given more days off. I firmly agree with this viewpoint as it will help the workers to have a good work-life balance and spend more time with their families.

One significant fact supporting my perspective is that a longer weekend will help people to relax themselves both mentally and physically. As a result, workers will return to work with more energy and enthusiasm. If they are forced to work six days a week, they will be exhausted and will simply lose their interest. It will not only affect their physical health, but will significantly also lower the production of an organisation. For example, some Indian workplaces compell their workers to work from Monday to Saturday, due to which maximum employees completely give up on their jobs and as a result the firm has to suffer.Consequently, in order to make huge profits, labourers should be provided sufficient days to rest by the employers.

Another considerable aspect is that this approach will prove to highly beneficial for those who stay away from their loved ones to pursue their jobs. People often have to move to large cities from their hometowns for better employment opportunities. What makes this long distance even more worse is that they are unable to meet their families for long. Having long weekends allows workers to meet their parents and other relatives more often. Additionally, every worker has some personal responsibilities or tasks that need too be essential fulfilled. Therefore, working week must be made relatively shorter.

In conclusion, to have better productivity and also taking into account the overall health of their employees, all the organisation should definitely increase holidays for a particular week.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student presents a clear position throughout the response agreeing with the prompt that working weeks should be shorter and weekends longer. The main ideas, such as improved mental and physical health, increased productivity, and better opportunities for family connection, are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as Indian workplaces. The task is fully addressed in line with the Band 7 and Band 8 descriptors, as ideas are extended and supported effectively throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction of the writer's stance, followed by health and productivity benefits in body paragraph one, family reasons in body paragraph two, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'One significant fact supporting my perspective', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, aligning well with Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'work-life balance', 'employment opportunities', and 'overall health'. There are some less common lexical items used with moderate success, although occasional slight inaccuracies appear, such as 'compell' instead of 'compel', and 'more worse' which is grammatically incorrect. However, the vocabulary range is more than adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 profile well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals and relative clauses effectively (e.g., 'If they are forced to work six days a week, they will be exhausted...'). There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably 'more worse' and 'need too be essential fulfilled' which detracts from accuracy. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of sentences are clear and well-structured, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
