Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern world, people are working hard for their necessaries. Many business and companies are putting pressure on their employees for six-day workweek. It has created an intense debate among people. many argue that reducing the number of working days and extending the weekend can benefit both workers and employers. Frm my perspective, I strongly agree with this notion and in this essay I will explain some reasons with examples to eloborate my thought.

One of the most important reasons, for shorting the workweek is the improvement it can bring to work-life balance. For instance, it provides more time for relaxation and personal activities, which helps to maintain their mental well-being. Furthermore, emlpoyees have more opportunities to pursue favourite hobbies or spend time with their family members and friends. Parents can spend their day off to engage with their children. Consequently, it leads to strengthening family relationships.

On the other hand, a reduced work week may result in economic benefits. As workers enjoy more leisure days, companies may be required to hire additional staff to maintain productivity, consequently creating job opportunities. This increase will automatically reduce unemployment rates in the labour market. People tend to be involve in more activities such as dining out, traveling, or shopping, which drives economic development in various aspects.

In conclusion, reducing the length of the workweek and extending the break period offer numerous benefits for employees, enhancing their quality of life. I believe that it is a positive change and brings more productivity and higher employee satisfication.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses all parts of the task, taking a firm position that a shorter working week and longer weekend are beneficial. Your main ideas are presented and supported with logical arguments, such as improvements in work-life balance and potential economic benefits like job creation. The position is clear throughout the essay, from the introduction to the conclusion. However, some ideas could have been extended further with more specific real-world examples rather than general statements. For instance, the point regarding economic development could be bolstered by mentioning specific industries or empirical trends. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are covered adequately, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You have used an appropriate paragraphing structure, separating the introduction, body paragraphs focusing on different aspects, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'On the other hand'. However, there are minor cohesion slip-ups, such as the missing capitalization and punctuation errors at the beginning of sentences (e.g. 'many argue' in the introduction) and occasional minor referencing issues. Overall, the flow of information is clear and easy to follow, representing a cohesive piece of writing that meets the criteria for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common vocabulary such as 'well-being', 'productivity', and 'unemployment rates'. You successfully convey your meaning, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'necessaries' instead of 'necessities', 'Frm' instead of 'From', 'eloborate' instead of 'elaborate', 'shorting' instead of 'shortening', 'emlpoyees' instead of 'employees', and 'satisfication' instead of 'satisfaction'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'put pressure on' is a bit informal, though acceptable. These inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band, placing your lexical control firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You have attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the essay, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g. 'As workers enjoy more leisure days, companies may be required...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating a reasonable level of grammatical control. However, there are several grammatical and mechanical errors, such as 'Many business and companies' (plural agreement error), 'People tend to be involve' (missing 'd'), and minor punctuation lapses. Despite these errors, your grammar and punctuation rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp your arguments. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for a Band 6.
