Student answer (Band 6.0)

n this contemporary society, there is an ongoing debate as to whether having less workdays or to reduce the days of the weekend. A substantial number of laborers are working nine to five which has numerous pros and cons. This essay will elucidate the purpose of this suggestion and impacts of this on not only the society but also on the economy.

There are several reasons why this concept is extremely appealing to the employees. First and foremost, having an extended weekend can encourage workers to be more productive and diligent. In spite of having a two-day break, several citizens do not consider it sufficient. In this way, they can have more time to spend time with their loved ones. Moreover, the major factor is that the individuals long for leisure days to unwind. To illustrate, a learner of a primary school has a burden of homework and studies. Educational institutions do not pay much attention to this matter as they assume that it is beneficial for their pupils. In contrast, students long for weekends to be free from the fierce competition and swamped schedule. Having a monotonous routine can jeopardize children's health and their mental well-being.

On the other hand, this suggestion can be the reason of citizens' indolence. As a result, they would not go the extra mile to achieve something in their life.

The adverse implications play a significant role on the society. Having less days to work can have adverse effects on the business field. The firms can lose projects as their workers are having days off. In a nutshell, they would be unable to wrap up their work without passing deadlines. A case in point is an emploee who is at home and spending time with his family, while at home he can find bigger fishes to catch in lieu of working on his projects.

From my perspective, the disadvantages of this idea outweighs the benefits. Without feeling overwhelmed a person can be inconsistent and careless. However, remote working is another solution to this issue. A number of companies has introduced this in their field which have beneficial ramifications without feeling under pressure.

To conclude, longer weekends' impacts depend on the citizens' behavior and the module of their prof

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both advantages and disadvantages of a shorter working week and longer weekend. However, the development of ideas occasionally wanders off-topic. For instance, the discussion on primary school learners and homework seems irrelevant to the core workplace issue. Similarly, the conclusion introduces a new idea about remote working rather than effectively synthesising the main points. While a clear stance is taken that disadvantages outweigh benefits, some arguments are under-developed, placing the response at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is arranged with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall progression. However, paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent, and some transitions feel mechanical or abrupt, such as shifting suddenly to children's education in the second paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in pronoun ambiguity and abrupt shifts between ideas (e.g., 'In this way, they can have more time...'). The conclusion is also truncated, leaving the final thought incomplete. These issues align with Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a range of vocabulary with some less common items such as 'contemporary society,' 'elucidate,' 'jeopardize,' and 'indolence.' However, there are notable collocation errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'having less workdays or to reduce the days of the weekend' and 'bigger fishes to catch in lieu of working.' There are also minor spelling and word-form errors, like 'emploee.' Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning, supporting a Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like conditional and relative clauses ('there is an ongoing debate as to whether...', 'In spite of having a two-day break...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'the disadvantages of this idea outweighs' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'Having less days to work' (quantifier error with countable nouns). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips cause occasional difficulty, placing this at Band 5.5.
