Student answer (Band 4.5)
To begin with, there are several reasons why this topic is important in our daily life. The main reason is that [TOPIC] can have a direct effect on people and society. Many people face this issue in their daily lives, and it can influence their lifestyle in different ways. For example, it may affect people’s work, education, health, or relationships. In addition, young people and families can also be influenced by this situation. Another important point is that [TOPIC] can have both positive and negative effects. It mainly depends on how people use it and how they deal with the situation.
Moreover, there are some possible ways to improve the situation. People should have proper knowledge and should make responsible decisions. The government, schools, and families can also play an important role by providing guidance and support. For instance, simple rules and better awareness can help people make better choices.
In conclusion, [TOPIC] is an important issue that should not be ignored. If people and society work together, the negative effects can be reduced and the situation can be improved.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The student has failed to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, writing only 180 words. Furthermore, the response relies heavily on placeholder text like '[TOPIC]' and fails to engage with the actual prompt regarding whether the working week should be shorter and the weekend longer. The writer provides generic statements about society, health, and government support rather than taking a clear position or developing ideas specific to the topic. Because the essay is significantly under-length and largely off-topic due to generic templating, it only addresses the task minimally, resulting in a low band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into three paragraphs, demonstrating some basic structural organisation with an introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion. However, the presence of placeholders like '[TOPIC]' disrupts the logical flow and makes it difficult to follow a clear line of argument. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used, but their mechanical nature cannot compensate for the lack of a cohesive topical progression. Paragraphing is present, but overall progression is hindered by the vague, templated nature of the content.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used throughout the response is extremely basic and repetitive, relying on generic terms like 'issues', 'situation', 'effects', and 'things' without demonstrating precision or flexibility. The frequent use of the bracketed placeholder '[TOPIC]' indicates a lack of substantive vocabulary related to the prompt. While there are few spelling errors, the range of vocabulary is far too limited to satisfy higher band requirements, as it fails to incorporate less common lexical items or demonstrate an awareness of style and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates control over some basic sentence structures, such as simple and compound sentences ('People should have proper knowledge and should make responsible decisions'). There are attempts at complex sentences with subordinate clauses ('It mainly depends on how people use it and how they deal with the situation'), but the grammatical range remains limited. Errors are relatively infrequent within the simple sentences produced, but the overall structural variety is restricted, and the heavy reliance on pre-fabricated, template-like phrasing limits a true assessment of advanced grammatical range.
