Student answer (Band 6.0)

Weekly working hours are widely discussed in corporate meetings and media. Some argue that short working week is suitable for working class and weekend should be longer. This essay will look at the arguments about working week. I agree that we should follow short working weeks and weekends should be extended.

Long weekends give us time for other importance activities. Workers will have a lot of time to manage family life with work. This will lead to a happy family and worker. So worker will concentrate on his work better. Furthermore, we can learn new hobbies or things for personal growth to spend our time productively like reading books, music or football. This will help us stay healthy both mentally and physically and a healthy mind will keep workers energetic. As a result, they will be more devoted to their work.

Shorter working week may lead to a better environment. When workers go to work less than five days a week, use of cars and buses will be reduced. These automobiles mostly use fossil fuel which emitt carbon dioxide and other harmful gases to the environment. This causes global warming and ultimately leads to climate change. So reducing working days directly reduces environmental affects, leading to a more sustainable and eco-friendly practice. For example, in Germany working week is already 4 times a week instead of 5 times in some good companies which is an encouraging practice.

Despite the above benefits, shorter working week may lead to longer completion times of projects. However, this concern can be addressed if companies introduce a flexible and remote working model in which people may work from home for some hours during weekends to meet important deadlines.

In conclusion, working days in a week is an important topic for discussion. Long weekend may provide more personal time to employees which can be utilized for other activities. Additionally, shorter working week is a more environmental friendly practice than longer working week. In believe that it is a good working model and should be adapted by more countries around the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating their position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. Main ideas regarding personal benefits and environmental impacts are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of Germany in the third paragraph. The response presents a fully developed argument that meets the requirements of the prompt effectively, earning a band score of 7.0 for presenting a clear position and extending well-supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression with logical organization across well-defined paragraphs. The introduction sets out the topic and position, body paragraphs focus on distinct points (personal/family benefits and environmental impact), and the conclusion summarizes the main thoughts. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Despite the above benefits'. However, minor mechanical referencing and occasional articles or transitions could be smoother, placing this comfortably in the band 6.5 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'sustainable', 'eco-friendly', and 'fossil fuel'. While there are some minor lexical inaccuracies or missing articles (e.g., 'short working week' instead of 'a short working week', 'environmental affects' instead of 'environmental effects', and 'In believe' instead of 'I believe'), these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey precise ideas, earning a solid band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional or subordinate clauses (e.g., 'When workers go to work less than five days a week, use of cars and buses will be reduced.'). There are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, notably article omissions ('short working week', 'better environment') and a preposition/pronoun typo in the conclusion ('In believe'). Despite these frequent minor errors, the structure remains clear and communication is rarely impeded, warranting a band 6.0.
