Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating an opinion in agreement with a shorter working week and longer weekend. The ideas presented, such as health benefits, increased efficiency, and positive economic impacts through leisure spending, are generally relevant to the task. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion regarding China relies on vague and unconvincing generalisations rather than well-supported evidence. While a clear position is maintained throughout the essay, the arguments could be extended further with more concrete examples to meet the requirements of higher band descriptors fully. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing this performance in the Band 6 category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, though the second body paragraph is slightly disjointed. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Secondly', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, as seen with 'Whereas i want workers' and 'ehich helps'. Referencing and substitution are occasionally faulty, causing minor disruptions to the logical flow. Despite these limitations, the progression of ideas is generally followable, making this a solid Band 5.5 or 6.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'well being work', 'proper reat', and 'work-life balance'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'laboring week' instead of 'working week', 'productive' as a noun instead of 'productivity', 'persnal', and spelling mistakes like 'ehich' and 'tiime'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, aligning with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure with sentences like 'Not only that but also, it reduce stress...'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement errors ('it reduce'), capitalization errors ('this is beneficial', 'i strongly'), and awkward phrasing ('Whereas i want workers four days working'). Punctuation is also weak in places, with missing commas and improper sentence boundaries. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they occur regularly and prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. This corresponds to a Band 5.0.
