Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that the working week should be reduced and weekends should be extended for workers. I agree with this view because it can benefit employees' mental and physical health. It also gives them more time to spend with their families and focus on other goals in life.

The main reason is that workers spend most of their time in offices during weekdays, which can cause various health problems. Full-time work can lead to mental and physical fatigue, and employees may not have enough time to rest. For example, in Pakistan, many employees in developed cities work long hours every day. This can cause several problems in their lives. They may not have enough time to look after their health and can become exhausted because of work-related pressure. Therefore, the working week should be shorter because it is crucial for employees' mental and physical health.

Longer weekends also allow workers to spend quality time with their families and friends. They have more time to focus on different goals in life and take proper rest. They can spend time with their children and wives and go out for dinner with their loved ones. They can also focus on household chores, such as cooking. In Pakistan, many young men enjoy cooking on weekends and prepare delicious meals for their families. Therefore, longer weekends can contribute to both social and personal well-being.

In conclusion, the working week should be shorter to protect employees' mental and physical health. I firmly agree with this view because shorter working weeks can improve people's quality of life. The government should introduce laws that protect workers and provide them with longer weekends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing that the working week should be shorter and weekends extended. The main ideas regarding mental and physical health, as well as personal and family life, are relevant and extended. For example, the student discusses how full-time work causes fatigue and supports this with an example from Pakistan. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed and general, such as mentioning household chores and cooking, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with a clear, consistent perspective throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that outlines the stance, followed by body paragraphs focusing on health and social benefits respectively, and a clear concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'The main reason is', 'For example', and 'Therefore' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate distinct ideas, ensuring the text is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'mental and physical fatigue', 'work-related pressure', 'quality of life', and 'personal well-being'. While there are attempts at less common lexical items, much of the vocabulary is standard and somewhat repetitive, such as 'spend time' and 'focus on' which appear frequently. Word choice and spelling are generally accurate, and occasional limitations in lexical variety do not impede communication. To improve, the student should integrate a wider variety of precise synonyms and collocation patterns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully employs subordinate clauses and conditional meanings, such as in 'Longer weekends also allow workers to spend quality time with their families and friends' and 'Therefore, the working week should be shorter because it is crucial for employees'. Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and simple sentences are mostly error-free. While complex structures are occasionally simplistic or repetitive, the errors present are minor and do not impede communication at any point, reflecting a solid command of basic and intermediate grammar.
