Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both sides of the argument, such as the benefits of increased leisure time versus the necessity of longer working hours for financial stability and career progression. The ideas are generally well-extended, with examples provided, such as the mention of WWO-World Wide Organisation. However, some arguments lack complete development and tend to over-generalise, particularly in the body paragraphs where sentence structures become slightly fragmented. Despite these minor lapses, the student successfully covers the prompt and maintains a consistent stance throughout. Therefore, the performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, using phrases like 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'By contrast'. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, the sentence starting with 'By means of this is, youngsters...' demonstrates a breakdown in logical linking and grammatical cohesion. Referencing and transitional phrasing occasionally feel forced rather than natural. Paragraph progression is generally logical, leading from personal benefits to economic drawbacks, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion, incorporating terms like 'prevalent', 'indispensable', 'remuneration', and 'disposable income'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'pro-longed' instead of 'prolonged', 'emplyees' instead of 'employees', 'beacuse', 'relexed', and 'contibute'. Additionally, collocation errors occur, such as 'intensed competetion' instead of 'intense competition'. These errors do not impede communication since the writer's meaning remains clear, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The lexical range is adequate for the task, fitting the Band 6.0 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'While, a substantial number of individuals assert that...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and clause structures, such as comma splices and dangling constructions (e.g., 'Hence, by playing sports games, they can...'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues like 'longer holiday can provides' and tense inconsistencies. While these errors do not fully obscure the meaning, they occur frequently enough to demonstrate limited control over complex structures, placing the essay firmly at Band 5.5.
