Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the past few decades, there has been a significant shift towards maintaining a better work-life balance, which can be maintained by reducing the working weeks and workers ought to have a longer weekends. I completely agree with this situation.

Firstly, the reduction in the working weeks will allow the working professionals more longer weekends, which helps them to have a better work-life balance and spend more time with their family, and especially the people who are married and have childrens will get benefited from this. For instance, if the weekends are longer, they can spend their time to go on a family outing or a short trip which include going to the theme parks, going for the long drive to the mountain regions to explore the natures beauty and to relax in the peaceful environment without the use of the electronic devices and gadgets and return to there homes or residing place before the ending of the weekends.

Secondly, the longer weekends and the shorter working weeks helps the working professionals to have ample amount of time to relax, unwind their body and return to work with greater efficiency and to be significantly higher motivation. For example, the IT professionals getting 5 days work, Saturday and Sunday off which helps them to come to office on Monday with fresh energy.

In conclusion, the shorter working week and longer weekends helps the employees to have better work-life balance, gives them the time to gain their efficiency back. By these reasons, I agree with the idea that workers should get longer weekend and reduced working weeks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly taking a position agreeing with the prompt. The main ideas regarding work-life balance, family time, and renewed efficiency are relevant and supported with explanations. However, the development of ideas tends to rely on repetitive phrasing rather than deeply extended arguments. For instance, the discussion on family outings in the first body paragraph becomes overly descriptive and meanders slightly without adding significant conceptual weight to the central argument. Additionally, there is a minor over-generalisation regarding IT professionals. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile for this criterion, as it clearly addresses the task with a well-maintained position, though idea extension could be more rigorous and varied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression. It begins with a transparent introductory paragraph stating the writer's position, followed by two distinct body paragraphs introduced by logical signposts ('Firstly' and 'Secondly'), and concludes with a brief summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to connect clauses, though some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, such as 'By these reasons' in the conclusion. While the logical flow is generally easy to follow, the cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical rather than fluid. This places the writing comfortably at Band 6.5, moving towards Band 7 due to the clear structure and paragraphing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'work-life balance', 'professionals', and 'efficiency'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'reducing the working weeks and workers ought to have a longer weekends' (plural/article mismatch), 'childrens' (incorrect plural form), 'natures beauty' (missing apostrophe), and 'return to there homes' (wrong homophone). Attempts at less common vocabulary sometimes lead to awkward phrasing, such as 'gain their efficiency back'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The lexical profile aligns best with a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'For instance, if the weekends are longer, they can spend their time...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors involving subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'the working weeks will allow... more longer weekends' (double comparative), 'helps the working professionals to have... and to be significantly higher motivation' (faulty parallelism), and missing plural/singular agreement in 'helps the employees to have better work-life balance'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but overly long, run-on sentences in the first body paragraph reduce grammatical control. This demonstrates a Band 6 level of performance.
