Student answer (Band 6.0)

The working week consisted of five days traditionally, leaving employees two days to rest and spend time with their families. However, some people believe that working days should be reduced and weekend should be longer. I strongly support this view beacause a shorter working week can increase people's well being and may help to enhance their productivity.

First of all, having a longer weekend can help workers maintain a better work-life balance. Most of the employees are spending more of their time at work and have very little time for their friends, family, hobbies and personal responsibilities. An additional day off would give them more time to relax and recover from work stress. For example, parents could spend one extra day with their children when weekend is longer. As a result they will feel more satisfied and happier with their lives.

An other benefit of having longer weekend is increased productivity at work. Employees returning to work after long weekend are more likely to work better with reduced stress compared to a short weekend. They are more focused and energetic at work time. Although they are working less days but the daily working hour can be increased to one hour to overcome the problem. Working one more hour per day looks convenient than working one full extra day per week. Anticipation for long weekend can increase productivity at work that is preferable to a company.

However a shorter working week may not b suitable for every industry. For example Hospitals , restaurants and transport services businesses need employee every single day at work. To overcome this situation, Companies can introduce shifts and flexible schedules so that they have available employees even on weekends. By doing so emplyees can still receive a day off without service intruption.

In conclusion, I firlmy support the idea or shorter working week because it increas work- life balance, decrease stress and ensure legitimate productivity. Although, some industries may face difficulties in adapting this system but certain measures can still improve the situation and may increase weekend length.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly presenting a position in favour of a shorter working week and supporting it with relevant ideas. The writer effectively discusses the benefits of a longer weekend, such as improved work-life balance and increased productivity, while also acknowledging the counterargument concerning industries that require continuous operation. Ideas are extended and supported well, though some points, such as the suggestion to increase daily working hours, are slightly generalised. Overall, the requirements of the prompt are fully covered, demonstrating a clear and well-developed argument that aligns with a Band 7 performance level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs exploring work-life balance, productivity, and counterarguments, and concluding neatly. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'As a result', 'An other benefit', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the text flows logically from one point to the next, which comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow flexibility and precision, using appropriate terms such as 'work-life balance', 'responsibilities', 'productivity', and 'flexible schedules'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, although occasional spelling and word-choice errors occur, such as 'beacause' instead of 'because', 'An other' instead of 'Another', 'emplyees', 'intruption', and 'firlmy'. Furthermore, phrases like 'service intruption' show minor collocation slips. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the overall lexical adequacy aligns with a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional clauses ('Although they are working less days but the daily working hour can be increased') and modal verbs ('Companies can introduce shifts'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including double subjects/conjunction clashing ('Although... but...'), missing articles ('Hospitals , restaurants and transport services'), and typographical issues. Despite these errors, the sentences remain comprehensible and communication is never impeded. The command of grammar and punctuation fits the Band 6 descriptor well.
