Student answer (Band 5.0)

In recent years, the traditional five-day working week has come under scrutiny as societies seek a better balance between professional professional productivity and personal well being. I completely agree with this notion that the working week should be shortened and the workers should granted a longer weekend . A reduced schedule not only boosts employees mental health but also enhance overall workplace productivity.

The primary reason of shorter working week for workers is that it helps them to boosts their mental health and physical well-being. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response clearly states a position in the introduction, agreeing that the working week should be shortened and workers granted a longer weekend. However, the candidate fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at 136 words. Furthermore, the body paragraphs are severely underdeveloped. The second body paragraph starts to explain the benefits to mental health and introduces an example involving an IT software engineer, but the text trails off incomplete at the end of the paragraph. Consequently, the ideas are not fully extended or supported as required for higher bands. According to the task achievement descriptors, this partial response and failure to complete the task severely limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a logical opening introduction that sets out the topic and the writer's stance. Basic cohesive devices such as 'In recent years', 'I completely agree', and 'The primary reason' are used to structure the text. However, because the essay is unfinished and cuts off mid-sentence, overall progression is heavily disrupted, and paragraphing cannot be fully evaluated. Referencing is attempted, but the abrupt ending prevents the logical development and sequencing of ideas. Cohesion becomes faulty due to the incomplete nature of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common collocations and lexical items such as 'professional productivity', 'personal well being', and 'software engineer'. There are some word choice errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'workers should granted a longer weekend' (missing auxiliary verb) and 'helps them to boosts' (incorrect verb form). However, the vocabulary used is generally relevant to the topic and does not impede overall communication. With a fully developed piece of writing, a higher lexical score would be attainable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'In recent years, the traditional five-day working week has come under scrutiny as societies seek a better balance...'. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including missing auxiliary verbs ('workers should granted'), incorrect verb infinitives ('helps them to boosts'), and a duplicated word ('professional professional'). Additionally, punctuation and sentence structure break down completely at the end where the text trails off unfinished. These errors and the limited sustained control place this criterion at the lower-middle band level.
