Student answer (Band 6.0)

People are constantly running in a rat race, trying to accomplish personal and professional goals. The number of working days should be reduced, allowing extended weekends. In my opinion, longer breaks are critical for the holistic development of an individual, who has been working around the clock to meet deadlines and organisational goals.

In todays contemporary world, mental health problems are becoming highly prevalent, signaling employees to priortise their well-being over career. The length of working week must be reduced to provide workers with adequate breaks, which are necessary for rejuvenation and mental recovery. Research from the past suggests that a period of relaxation is often followed by a wave of improved productivity. Hence, an escape from reality, that is from the daily burdens of work, is crucial for overall growth and developement.

In addition, longer weekends offer the opportunity to bond with family members and friends, and other personal tasks. During the week, a person works against the clock, frequently disrupting their work-life balance, which results into failure to accomplish personal goals and aspirations. Last year, when I was interning at a special needs clinic, by the end of the which, I realised that I missed several family functions that were held on Fridays.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response presents a clear position supporting shorter working weeks and extended weekends. The introduction outlines the stance, and body paragraphs present relevant arguments concerning mental health and personal relationships. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at only 205 words. Due to this under-length constraint, the ideas remain somewhat under-developed, particularly in the third paragraph, which cuts off abruptly. Consequently, Task Achievement cannot exceed Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a basic logical organisation with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a clear overarching progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'In addition' and 'Hence', though referencing is occasionally faulty, as seen in the phrase 'the end of the which' in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is incomplete and lacks a proper concluding sentence. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, but the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items such as 'holistic development', 'prevalent', 'rejuvenation', and 'work-life balance'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'todays' instead of 'today's', 'priortise' instead of 'prioritise', and 'developement' instead of 'development'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'allowing extended weekends' and 'which results into failure'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably 'results into' instead of 'results in', and the structurally flawed sentence ending ('by the end of the which, I realised...'). Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, demonstrating the characteristics of Band 6 grammar.
