Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by agreeing with the statement that the working week should be shorter, and presents relevant ideas such as increased productivity, better health, and more time for family and personal development. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are somewhat generalised or underdeveloped, particularly the point regarding shops being closed on weekends, which is slightly confusing and less relevant to the main argument. Overall, all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear stance, placing this performance comfortably at Band 6.5, rounded to 6 for slightly underdeveloped extension in places.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a standard essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, dividing distinct points such as productivity, health, and family time. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent transitions like 'To commence with', 'Firsly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is generally clear, but transitional links occasionally feel formulaic rather than naturally integrated, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'backbone of business', 'productivity', and 'mental and physical disorders'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('paagraphs', 'Firsly', 'goining', 'boosts relationship' instead of 'boosts relationships', 'skiils') and minor word choice issues. While these errors do not impede overall communication, the repetitive use of basic vocabulary and lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 6 an accurate assessment.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'if they get more holidays they can rest more so that they will be more energetic'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('employees are backbone'), comma splices, and awkward phrasing like 'which help help them in future'. Although the errors are noticeable and require some re-reading, they do not severely impede communication, which aligns well with the Band 6 criteria for grammatical range and accuracy.
