Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people spend a large part of their lives working> Some people believe that the working week should be reduced and employees should have a longer weekend, I agree with this opinion because it can improve workers health and may also increase their productivity.

Firstly, a shorter working week can help employees maintain a better work-life balance. When people work for many hours every week, they may have less time for their family, friends and personal activities. A longer weekend would give them more time to relax and recover from work. For example, as per recent reports if employees spend more time with family and with their kids, exercise regularly or travel to nearby places. Then employees think more sharp and put more productivity in work.

Secondly, reducing working hours could improve productivity. When employees are tired because of long working hours, they may find difficult to concentrate and can make more mistake. In contrast, well-rested workers may be able focus better and complete their tasks more efficiently. For instance, if a company gives employees and extra day off, they may return to work feeling refreshed and motivated.

However, some businesses may face difficulties if the working week is reduced. Companies may need to hire additional employees or organise working schedules differently to maintain their services. Nevertheless, these problems can be managed through flexible working hours and better planning.

In conclusion, I agree that the working week should and the weekend should be longer. This can provide workers with a healthier lifestyle while also helping them remain productive at work

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly presenting a position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding health and productivity. The introduction clearly states agreement with the proposition. The body paragraphs develop ideas related to work-life balance and operational challenges, such as 'reducing working hours could improve productivity' and acknowledging that 'some businesses may face difficulties'. The main ideas are well-supported, although some supporting points, such as the sentence fragment 'For example, as per recent reports if employees spend more time with family...', lack full grammatical completion and could be further elaborated. Overall, the task is addressed well, fitting the Band 7 descriptor where all parts are addressed and a clear position is maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as benefits to health, impacts on productivity, counterarguments, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed adequately using transition markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing and sentence connection are slightly mechanical or faulty, such as starting the sentence with 'Then employees think more sharp', which disrupts the flow between clauses. Despite these minor issues, the logical organisation remains clear throughout, aligning with the Band 7 criteria for cohesion and paragraphing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'work-life balance', 'concentrate', 'efficiently', and 'flexible working hours'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, for instance, 'think more sharp' instead of 'think more sharply' or 'think more clearly', and 'can make more mistake' (plural error). Less common vocabulary is attempted with some awareness of style, but occasional errors prevent access to higher bands. Communication is never impeded by these lexical slips, making this a solid performance at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on standard whole/half band scoring.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'When people work for many hours every week, they may have less time for their family...' and 'If a company gives employees and extra day off...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, including comma splices and missing articles or pluralization (e.g., 'workers health' instead of 'workers' health', 'may find difficult' instead of 'may find it difficult', 'and extra day' instead of 'an extra day'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to Band 6.
