Student answer (Band 6.0)

The working week should be shortened so as to provide workers a longer weekend. I agree as much as disagree with the above notion. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I have supported my stand with reasonable justifications and relevant examples.

Taking into account the agreement side, the longer weekend a worker gets, the more time he gets to rejuvenate himself. This may result in increasement of energy and focus in the employee as he has relaxed and rejuvenated himself because of longer weekend. As a result, the worker would be able to work with great efficiency. To exemplify, if a worker working in a electronics shop works 5 days a week and for 8 hours each day and commits mistakes while essembling TV, when given longer weekend and told to work only 4 days, he may not make the same amount of mistrakes while assembling TV.

Now considering the disagreement side, giving long weekend results in less number of working days; owing to which the manufacturing capacity of the firm or company may decrease. If the manufacturing capacity decreases, it will result in insufficient supply making company unable to manufacture the same amount and provide sufficient supply. This will result in loss of company.

To conclude, having long weekends is of much advantageous to not only workers but also company as long weekend gives more time to relax resulting in greater efficiency of the employee. On the other side, it can be loss causing for the company as long weekend means less working days and reduced production making company face loss. So, a company should think of both the side before deciding whether to give workers long weekend or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a balanced view of both agreeing and disagreeing with the prompt, though the position taken in the introduction is slightly contradictory ('agree as much as disagree'). The ideas are generally relevant, but some are under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on the agreement side introduces the idea of employee rejuvenation, but the supporting example about a worker in an electronics shop is somewhat simplistic and relies heavily on repetition rather than deep elaboration. Similarly, the disagreement section mentions that manufacturing capacity may decrease, but it lacks specific details or concrete examples to fully develop this point. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to provide fully extended and supported arguments without repeating the same core concepts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the discussion into logical sections, including an introduction, separate body paragraphs for opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive. The writer relies heavily on transitional phrases like 'Taking into account the agreement side' and 'Now considering the disagreement side', which makes the flow a bit rigid. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the links between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that the progression of ideas from one sentence to the next is seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items such as 'rejuvenate', 'manufacturing capacity', and 'advantageous'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation. For example, the student writes 'increasement' instead of 'increase', 'essembling' instead of 'assembling', and 'mistrakes' instead of 'mistakes'. Phrases like 'loss causing for the company' also show awkward collocation. While these lexical errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited range and occasional slips in word form. To improve, the writer must focus on accurate word derivation, spelling, and natural phrasing suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and conditional sentences, such as 'if a worker working in a electronics shop works 5 days a week... he may not make the same amount of mistrakes'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including article misuse ('in a electronics shop'), minor subject-verb agreement issues, and awkward phrasing within grammatical patterns. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication. To move up to the next band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater control, ensuring that the majority of complex sentences are entirely error-free.
