Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing that the working week should be shortened and a longer weekend implemented. Relevant ideas are presented, such as stress relief, environmental benefits, and increased productivity. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full explanation. For instance, the mention of Iceland and Germany is cut off by an intrusive fragment about environmental benefits, leaving the example undeveloped. Similarly, the conclusion introduces new benefits like health improvement rather than summarising the main points effectively. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all main points fully with coherent, uninterrupted examples and maintain a clear line of development throughout every paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance stated in the introduction. Paragraphing is attempted, though structural issues disrupt the logical flow. For example, the second body paragraph contains an abrupt insertion of text about environmental benefits that clearly belongs elsewhere. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with' and 'Moreover', but referencing is sometimes faulty and mechanical, and transitions between sentences can feel disjointed. Furthermore, the final conclusion is very brief and fails to provide a smooth, logical synthesis of the preceding arguments. Achieving a higher band requires ensuring that all sentences within a paragraph logically connect to a single central topic without disruptive intrusions, and employing a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices to guide the reader seamlessly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'indispensable', 'rejuvenate', and 'productivity'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'work shorter' instead of 'work shorter hours', 'compnay's' (spelling), 'heatlh' (spelling), and 'work hardly' instead of 'work hard'. Additionally, phrases like 'the another prominent merit' contain grammatical collocation errors. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a lack of precision. To reach the next band, the writer should use a wider, more flexible lexical resource with greater awareness of style and collocation, while eliminating spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as in 'in long holidays workers can relief their stress' where 'relief' is used incorrectly as a verb instead of 'relieve', and 'in upcoming paragraps' which misses a definite article and contains a spelling error. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also mishandled in places, such as mid-sentence fragments interrupting the flow. To improve, the writer needs to increase control over complex sentence structures and significantly reduce basic grammatical errors.
