Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a clear position agreeing that the working week should be shorter, but the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. While the writer touches on relevant points such as health benefits, productivity, and economic growth, these ideas lack thorough support and elaboration. For instance, the mention of spending time on hobbies or making short trips is stated simply without explaining how shorter hours directly translate to these outcomes on a societal scale. Some points are repetitious, particularly the ideas surrounding job creation and economic growth in the conclusion and body paragraphs. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support each main idea with more detailed explanations and specific examples rather than relying on brief, generalised assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organisation with a recognizable introduction and conclusion, and paragraphs are used to separate different points. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the essay, and the movement between ideas can feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'However' and 'On the other hand' which do not always correctly signal the logical relationship between sentences. For example, 'However, this is also worthwhile for country growth' does not present a genuine contrast to the preceding sentence. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leading to a mechanical feel in the overall arrangement. To achieve a higher score, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used accurately to guide the reader smoothly from one supporting point to the next, creating a clearer logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message about working hours. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'productivity', 'unemployment', and 'economic growth', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. Examples include 'benefical' instead of beneficial, 'convinent' instead of convenient, 'strongle' instead of strongly, 'statment' instead of statement, 'heather' instead of healthier, 'hatic' instead of hectic, and 'constration' instead of concentration. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede the natural flow of the text. To improve, the writer needs to expand their control of word forms and improve spelling accuracy, while also incorporating a wider and more precise range of vocabulary appropriate for academic discussions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text. Examples include 'Flexible working hour is benefical', 'It is often argue', 'Many wokers are working ith whole week and there are always busy', 'employee have 35 hours a week', and 'If authority intrroduce new rule for 35 hour a week is favorble'. These frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns, improve sentence variety by correctly incorporating complex structures, and ensure greater accuracy in verb tenses and agreement.
