Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response attempts to address the topic regarding a shorter working week and longer weekend, but the position is obscured by severe lapses in clarity and relevance. While the writer mentions personal preferences such as wanting the weekend to spend time with family or 'explore museum and travels,' the ideas are extremely limited, repetitive, and under-developed. Sentences like 'I am telling about workers in short time and other about long time' fail to present a coherent argument or adequately discuss the core prompt. The expression of views is disjointed, meaning the task is addressed only minimally. To reach a higher standard, the writer must clearly state a position in the introduction and support well-developed, logically organized arguments with relevant examples throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. Although the writer attempts to structure the text into multiple paragraphs, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow. Transitions between ideas are abrupt and confusing, as seen when shifting from discussing night duties directly to personal weekend preferences without any logical bridge. Furthermore, cohesive devices are used inappropriately or mechanically, such as the repetitive and misused 'In Addition' and 'overall'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's line of thought. Improving this area requires establishing a clear central topic for each paragraph, using appropriate transitional phrases to link ideas smoothly, and ensuring a logical sequence from introduction to conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a very limited range of words that are frequently strained or inappropriate for the context. Examples include phrases like 'worker may be have a longest week' and 'disappoint with us', which demonstrate a lack of control over standard word forms, collocations, and prepositions. While the writer attempts some less common words such as 'consequently' and 'restriction', their inaccurate usage often causes strain for the reader and impedes clear communication. To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their working vocabulary beyond everyday terms, practice correct word combinations and collocations, and pay closer attention to word forms and parts of speech in different contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, relying primarily on simple sentence structures that are frequently ungrammatical. There are frequent errors across multiple sentence forms, including persistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('worker may be have', 'worker on duty and time will not b managed'), incorrect verb tenses and auxiliary verbs ('I should weekend has been time spend'), and faulty article use. Punctuation is also poorly handled throughout the text. These frequent errors often distort the meaning and make the sentences difficult to interpret. To progress, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb forms and tense consistency, and reducing the frequency of fundamental grammatical mistakes.
