IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Yes, I agree to the idea that the working days in a week should be shorter and weekends should be longer as comapred to how it is today.
It is usually five working days and two days for the weekends.
Which is a lot less for a person who is completely busy and is working throughout the week.
In those two days, a person has to make time for their family, meet friends, do laundry, tidy up their place, have some hobbies, spend some time with themselves.
Which seems hectic because weekends should be for resting and recharging but being busy the entire week makes you keep putting things for the weekends.
So, most people are even more busier on weekends than on weekdays.
So, I think it should be 3 days of full time work and the forth day should be a half working day. Like Monday to Wednesday a full day at work and Thursday should be a half working day.
In this way the week is equally divided for work-life balance.
Or it can be 4 complete working days and 3 days for weekends to reset.
Out of these two working models, companies can choose whatever works best for them and their employees.
There are many companies who believe reducing a working day would be a loss to their resources and forget that most people slow down and are just getting by the week. So it actually decreases the efficiency and motivation among the employees. By using one of these two models they can actually enhance employee efficiency and output.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with having a shorter working week and longer weekends. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the burden of household chores on the current two-day weekend and the potential for increased employee efficiency under a revised schedule. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the suggestion of specific working models—like working Monday to Wednesday with a half-day on Thursday—is introduced but not thoroughly explored regarding its wider economic or practical implications. This reflects a response that covers the task adequately with relevant points, but stops short of full, rigorous elaboration across all arguments, successfully meeting the threshold for this level while hinting at fuller development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text displays an overall coherent arrangement, presenting a clear stance from the opening sentence. Information is generally presented in a logical sequence, moving from the personal burdens of a standard five-day week to proposed alternative models and company benefits. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty, heavily relying on repetitive sentence starters like "Which" and "So" to link ideas, as seen in "Which is a lot less for a person..." and "So, most people are even more busier...". Paragraphing is also underutilised, as the entire body of the essay is compressed into a single block of text rather than being broken down into distinct introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the natural flow and progression expected at higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's opinions on work-life balance and employee efficiency. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as "work-life balance," "reset," and "resources," but this is accompanied by some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, spelling errors like "comapred" appear, and expressions like "more busier" show a lack of precision with comparative forms. Word choice occasionally borders on informal or imprecise, such as "tidy up their place" or "getting by the week." Nevertheless, the lexical range remains minimally sufficient for the communication of ideas, and the errors do not severely impede the overall understanding of the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound arguments such as "In this way the week is equally divided for work-life balance." There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present throughout the text, including fragment sentences like "Which is a lot less for a person who is completely busy and is working throughout the week," and minor agreement or prepositional slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences remains clear to the reader. The writer shows adequate control over basic structures, and while complex sentences are attempted, they sometimes exhibit structural faults that prevent the writing from achieving a higher degree of grammatical polish.
