Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that the working days should be shorter because it would give employees a longer weekend. I largely agree with this view because longer weekends could give workers more time for themselves and for their families. Additionally, limited working hours could lead to reduction in environmental pollution.
One of the main benefits of shorter working days is that employees would get plenty of time for themselves and their familes, which is not possible when they work for five days a week. This is because, many employees have hectic routines and strict schedules which make it difficult for them to spend quality time with their relatives and families. Consequently, if employees get an extra-off day, they could utilise that period in looking after their families and taking part in different activities, which can ultimately improve overall well-being of an individual. Moreover, they would get an opportunity to complete their pending tasks and responsibilities which are neglected due to their busy routines. For example, if employees work for four days, they would get chance to finish their assignments. As a result, they could feel more relaxed and encouraged for the following working days.
Another advantage is that working for limited days could reduce environmental pollution which is usually cause by commuting to work. Workers spend a lot of time in traffic, some may have longer routes which results in combustion of fuels and wasting their time. Consequently, working four-days a week could save employees time, energy and fuel combustion. For instance, employees who spend two hours for commuting to work if they get an extra day off, they could use that time in several activities and looking after their physical health, which is quite neglected due to work pressure.
In my opinion, although shorter days have several advantages, however it can also affect employees discipline and loses their motivation to work. These drawbacks can be mitigated by ensuring works to work on time and maintain their discipline. Despites these drawbacks I believe its benefits outweigh its disadvantages.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that shorter working days would improve overall employees physical and mental health. Additionall, workers can spend a lot of time with their families and reduce environmental pollution. These drawbacks can be resolved if workplace ensures better disciple of em

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, which is a strong feature of a higher band. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the benefits to personal well-being and the reduction of environmental pollution through less commuting. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full extension, which places the response securely at the lower half of the scale. For instance, the counter-argument regarding discipline is introduced in the fourth paragraph but remains somewhat superficial rather than fully explored. Overall, the main arguments are clear and supported by general examples, but deeper elaboration on all points would be required to reach the next band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, as each paragraph focuses on a distinct point starting with a logical topic opener like 'One of the main benefits' and 'Another advantage'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, which is characteristic of this level. For example, the transitional phrases used between sentences occasionally feel repetitive or slightly forced, such as the recurring use of 'Consequently' and 'Moreover'. Additionally, the conclusion cuts off abruptly mid-sentence, disrupting the flow of the text and preventing a smooth final progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'environmental pollution', 'combustion of fuels', and 'well-being'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'familes' instead of families, 'extra-off day', and 'loses their motivation' instead of causing a loss of motivation. Furthermore, minor awkward collocations appear, such as 'ensuring works to work on time'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision and control over less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety through conditional structures like 'if employees work for four days, they would get chance to finish their assignments.' However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that surface throughout the text, including missing articles ('get chance'), preposition errors ('cause by' instead of caused by), and subject-verb agreement issues. Complex sentences are often faulty, and the incomplete final sentence reveals a lack of strict control over sentence boundaries and clause structures. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, aligning with this specific level.
