Student answer (Band 6.5)

Too many days of the week are spent on working and an average people should get more days off at weekends. I completely agree with this statement. People are more productive after sufficient rest and operating on fewer days is cost-effective for an institute.

Human beings require rest to function optimally both mentally and physically. Work in general puts great strain on the workers at various level. There is the constant pressure to meet deadlines, the long hours of sitting or the physical labour depending on the type of work. All these have damaging effect on a worker's psych and physic. So they need rest to recover. For the rest to be effective it needs to be long enough to facillitate recovery. Think of sleeping. A person getting an uninterrupted sleep of 8 hours would have much higher productivity and be a better worker than someone who got 5 hours of sleep. Longer weekends would similarly help a worker get rid of deeper fatigue and would make them a more effective worker generating productivity for the company or organization. This has already been put to practice in China where they have made weekends 3 days long after seeing positive results on productivity.

Longer weekends is not only good for the workers but also good for the owners. The running of a company requires a lot of logistics and there are associated expenses. They can save on electricity bills, lunch and refreshment expenses, transportation costs and many more. This is the reason that when a country is short on resouces like fuel they make office hours mandatorily shorter e.g. during the Hormmuz Canal Blockade when fuel crisis became significant, countries like Bangladesh reduced office hours.

To conlcude, a shorter work week has beneficial aspects for both workers and companies. The workers would get more work done in a shorter time period which will in turn help the organization reduce cost of operating on more days.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task with a clear position throughout, as seen in statements like 'I completely agree with this statement.' The main ideas regarding worker productivity and company cost-effectiveness are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the reference to practices in China and the Hormuz Canal Blockade. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in places, and certain ideas could be more fully developed to reach the highest standards, placing the response solidly in the band where all parts are addressed though some aspects show a slight tendency towards generalisation rather than deep elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction of the stance, moving through physiological and economic arguments, and concluding neatly. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'For the rest to be effective' and 'This has already been put to practice', though some connections feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement that guides the reader smoothly from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'cost-effective', 'physiological', and 'logistics'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word form that reflect this level, such as 'an average people' instead of 'average people', 'psych and physic' instead of 'psyche and physique', 'facillitate' with a spelling error, and 'Longer weekends is' where subject-verb agreement is affected by vocabulary patterns. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and causal relationships effectively (e.g., 'A person getting an uninterrupted sleep... would have much higher productivity'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, such as missing articles ('at weekends', 'in China') and pluralisation errors ('Longer weekends is' instead of 'are'). Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without difficulty and satisfying the criteria for a mixture of accurate and flawed structures.
