Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a partial agreement regarding shorter working weeks and longer weekends. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions that shorter working hours help prevent diseases like heart attacks and allow time for hobbies, but these points are stated rather than extended with detailed explanations or strong supporting evidence. Similarly, the arguments concerning company growth and economic impacts in the fourth paragraph are introduced superficially. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present fully developed ideas with relevant extensions and well-supported explanations throughout all parts of the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, satisfying basic organizational requirements. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different arguments, such as the benefits of shorter hours and the potential drawbacks for companies. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, relying on repetitive transitions like 'to begin with', 'furthermore', and 'nevertheless' without always demonstrating smooth logical progression between sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly with pronouns such as 'this' and 'they' in the final body paragraph. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure clear referencing between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'explore new place' and 'rich culture', though these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation. For example, phrases like 'significant number of peoples', 'company should introduced', and 'majority of the pupil' demonstrate limitations in lexical control. Spelling and word-form errors, such as 'tis time' instead of 'this time', occur frequently enough to occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, improve word formation, and ensure accurate collocation in line with standard academic expectations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside frequent attempts at complex sentence forms that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles, subject-verb agreement issues like 'company should provided', and incorrect prepositional usage. For example, sentences such as 'because majority of the pupil should shorter work hours so they do not learn to proper experience' contain frequent errors that cause noticeable difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a better command of complex grammatical structures with fewer errors and improved control over basic sentence mechanics.
