Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that the working week should be shorter and weekends extended. The main ideas, such as improved family time, reduced stress, and economic stimulation through tourism and employment, are relevant and directly answer the prompt. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full elaboration. For instance, the point regarding Vietnam and GDP is introduced abruptly without sufficient explanation of how shorter work hours directly caused this economic outcome. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend these supporting arguments with greater depth and clearer real-world examples that directly align with the core thesis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct themes, such as personal benefits and economic impacts. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and faulty. Devices like 'On the one hand' are used without a corresponding 'On the other hand', and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in confusing transitions like 'Before the aforementioned personal advantages'. Furthermore, sentences within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to run-on structures and weak cohesive links. Improving the logical flow between sentences and ensuring precise transitional phrases would significantly enhance the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'sustainable way', 'work-life balance', and 'employment rate'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes ('virgous', 'streel', 'ellaborate', 'alicates', 'noticaeble', 'inadditionall', 'decearese') and awkward word choices ('burst out' instead of 'burnout', 'non working hours' instead of 'reduced working hours'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding word-formation knowledge, refining collocations, and paying closer attention to standard spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied syntactic structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('workplaces evolves', 'employe become', 'country became'), incorrect verb tenses ('is increase', 'tourism and country became'), and punctuation errors like run-on sentences and comma splices ('Its, help alot to alleviate their strees and also very essential...'). Furthermore, prepositional usage and articles are sometimes mishandled inside grammatical patterns. Although the meaning can usually be deciphered, these persistent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited level of structural control.
