Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout in favour of a shorter working week and longer weekend. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations regarding stress reduction, productivity, and social skills. For instance, the discussion on how modern technology and companies like Microsoft and Meta implement flexible working conditions provides good support for the argument. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as stating broadly that most developed countries experience this exact shift, and some ideas could be further substantiated with tighter examples. Overall, the content fully satisfies the requirements for addressing the prompt with a clear and developed standpoint, with 13 words copied from the prompt excluded from the word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, such as the benefits to personal well-being in the second paragraph and the technological shifts in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'ON OTHER WORDS' contain spelling errors and mechanical referencing issues, while other cohesive devices are occasionally over-used or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'HELPS TO' and 'CONSIDERABLE'. Reference pronouns are not always completely clear in their antecedent links, which prevents the essay from achieving a higher band. Nonetheless, the overall structure remains easy to follow from introduction to conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'PHENOMENON', 'MULTI-NATIONAL', and 'INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation. For instance, phrases like 'I AM TOTALLY AGREE' misuse parts of speech, 'ENHACE' is misspelled, 'VERTUAL' contains a spelling error, and 'LACK HUMAN INVOLVMENT' uses an incorrect verb form. While these vocabulary and spelling errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict the score, showing an inconsistent control of less common vocabulary and lexical precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'which helps to be more social'. However, control over grammatical structures is inconsistent, featuring frequent errors in article usage, subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation. Examples include 'SHORTER WORKING WEEK HAVE' (disagreement), 'COMPLETE TASK IN PARTICULAR TIME' (missing articles/determiners), 'WEEKEND GIVE' (disagreement), and 'INDIVIDUALS INTEREST' (missing possessive apostrophe). Attempts at complex sentence structures often result in faulty grammar, and punctuation is occasionally unreliable, causing some difficulty for the reader and placing the grammatical control firmly within this band.
