Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent decades, there is an ongoing debate whether employees should get longer holidays and working hours should also be lesser. I firmly agree with the given view which I will discuss in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, there are several reasons for my opinion. First and foremost, if a person works for shorter hours and have long weekends, it allows them to spend quality time with their family and friends, thereby maintaining work-life balance. Additionally, people can indulge themselves not only in physical activities but also in mental activities which can lead to a healthy lifestyle. For example, if a person is going for daily walks, doing meditation and yoga, it will eventually help them in improving their health.

Furthermore, having plenty of time can improve the skillset of a person. A person can pursue hobbies in which they are intersested as each person has their own choices and prefrences. In addition to this, some persons are hodophile by nature and wants to travel and explore different places so, a person can travel only if they have spare time and having longer weekends will help people to explore distinct cultures and also helps in gaining the knowledge.

In conclusion, I believe that the working hours should be shorter because it helps people to improve their skillset and they can maintain a work-life balance. Moreover, it also helps person to improve their creativity by indulging themselves in mental activities and physical activities which results in keeping diseases at bay.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear overall position agreeing with the proposition that the working week should be shortened. Main ideas are presented, such as achieving a better work-life balance and improving skillsets, which align with the requirements of the prompt. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, placing the response securely at this level. For instance, while the benefits of physical and mental activities are introduced, the explanation remains somewhat general rather than being fully extended with specific real-world examples or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to provide more thoroughly developed arguments that fully explore the broader societal or economic implications of shorter working weeks, rather than relying on brief supporting statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic. Each body paragraph opens with a logical signpost such as 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore', guiding the reader through the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct arguments about lifestyle, health, and skill development. However, cohesion is at times mechanical, and referencing can feel slightly repetitive, as seen in the frequent reliance on 'a person' and basic transitional phrases. Additionally, the conclusion introduces minor repetition of ideas already stated without adding fresh progression. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider and more sophisticated variety of cohesive devices and ensure referencing throughout the text is seamlessly integrated without mechanical repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas. The student attempts less common lexical items, such as 'work-life balance', 'indulge themselves', and 'distinct cultures', showing an awareness of topic-related vocabulary. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling that reflect this band level. For example, terms like 'intersested' (interest), 'prefrences' (preferences), 'hodophile', and the awkward phrase 'wants to travel and explore different places so, a person can travel only if they have spare time' demonstrate occasional lapses in lexical precision and word form. To move up to the next band, the student needs to use a wider range of less common vocabulary with greater accuracy, ensuring that all spellings and word choices are natural and entirely correct.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting various structures such as conditional clauses and relative clauses. There is control over basic sentence construction, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text. Noticeable issues include subject-verb agreement errors such as 'people works' or 'persons are hodophile... and wants', article omissions, and slightly awkward phrasing like 'working hours should also be lesser' instead of 'shorter'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily. To progress further, the writer must demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, ensuring that the majority of sentences are completely free of basic grammatical slips.
