Student answer (Band 6.0)

An increasing number of people believe that working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. This idea is double-edged sword. While this belief have some advantages i believe that disadvatages are more. Consequently, i disagree with this statement.

On the positive side longer holidays would lead to more time with friends and family. Recent research, ellaborates that spending more time with family, leads to better psychological health. In addition, statistics demonstrates that a significant amount of people suffer from stress, as a result of not being able to find a balance in work and home. They do not have enough time to spend with their family and leads to conflict. A worker with a mind at peace, can focus more on the work and the quality of the work would be improved. For instance, a manger with good mental and emotional health would mange the team better, as he or she is not tensed with family concerns.

On the other hand, If people are given longer holidays, it will affect the overall performance of the organization and economics of the whole country. For instance, longer weekend would lead to shorter working days, which results in two factors. Initially, workers are left with less time to complete a given task, that would lead to stress. Consequently, the overall quality of the performance would be effected negatively. Additionally, the work that takes one week to complete now, would require 2 weeks to complete. For example, if the workers in shoes industry are given longer holidays, the weekly production would be reduced. Thus, the organization speed of production and the amount of profit would be reduced. Which would lead to reduction in salary and raise in demand and prices. The need of public is the same but the decreament in the quantity of goods would lead to raise in prices of the product.

In conclusion, whiile this belief has lots of banefit, the disadvantages are on a larger scale, affecting the whole ecconomy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that the disadvantages of a shorter working week outweigh the advantages. The ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing psychological health and organizational productivity. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as the claim that a two-week delay in production would universally occur across industries like the shoe industry. The arguments are generally well-developed and relevant, showcasing a clear progression of thought that aligns with the requirements of this band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, fully satisfying the requirements of the lower band while demonstrating some elements of the next. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, such as 'On the positive side' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or faulty, as seen in repetitive sentence openings and minor lapses in transitions between sentences, which prevents the essay from reaching a fully seamless flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items like 'psychological health', 'organization', and 'production'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'disadvatages', 'ellaborates', 'manger', 'tensed', 'economics' instead of economy, 'effected' instead of affected, 'decreament', 'banefit', and 'ecconomy'. These errors reflect a typical profile where vocabulary is sufficient for communication, but frequent inaccuracies in spelling and word form prevent the use of a wider or more precise lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional sentences ('If people are given longer holidays, it will affect...') and relative clauses. However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('working week' instead of 'the working week', 'shoes industry' instead of 'the shoe industry'), subject-verb agreement issues ('this belief have', 'statistics demonstrates', 'leads to conflict'), and awkward punctuation like unnecessary commas ('Consequently, i disagree'). These errors are frequent enough to show control of basic structures while revealing persistent inaccuracies in complex patterns.
