Student answer (Band 6.5)

There has always been a debate about whether workers deserve a longer weekend to decompress. I am of the opinion, that modern work environment has become very stressful and workers need more time to maintain their physical and psychological health.

`Work these days have become fast-paced to meet the requirements of current times, due to which young adults, older adults and even senior citizens spend most of their time working. This habit has destroyed their physical and psychological health, which has consequently, reduced the life span of current generation and increased medical problems even among young people. The best way to deal with these growing problems is to change the working conditions. Working days should be shorter, while weekends should be longer. The longer weekends would give ample time to worker to work on their mental well-being. They would be able to attend therapy, meet up with friends and family, thus, making their support system strong, which would help them to deal with their psychological problems. This would also give working parents enough time to connect with their spouses and children, thus strengthing social fabric. Some work places have already started working on their employees mental well-being, for instance, establishing day cares and announcing days like bringing your children to work. This helps to reduce the guilt of not spending enough time with family and employees tend to focus more on work.

Current food habits and work timings has taken a great toll on employees. They don't have enough time for physical activities as they have to sit in a cubical from dawn to dusk. Longer weekends would give time to employees for physical activities, like hiking, walking, marathons and gym. This would allow them to maintain their physical health. Most companies provide a gym these days to keep their employees in a good shape because as the saying goes " A healthy mind resides in a healthy body".

In conclusion, workers should have a longer weekend to maintain a balance between their work life and private life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you support shorter working weeks and longer weekends because they could improve workers’ physical and psychological health. You address the question directly and extend your main points with relevant examples, including time for therapy, family relationships and exercise. The discussion of working parents adds a useful social dimension. However, some claims are broad—for example, that work habits have “reduced the life span of current generation”—and would be more convincing if qualified or supported. The point about workplace childcare and bringing children to work is relevant to family well-being, but its connection to a longer weekend is not fully explained. Develop that link and support key claims more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs focused on psychological and physical health, and a concluding statement. Ideas generally progress logically, and examples such as therapy, family time and exercise help illustrate the argument. You also use linking expressions such as “consequently,” “for instance” and “In conclusion.” At times, however, cohesion becomes mechanical through repeated “This would” and “thus,” and some sentences carry several related points at once. The workplace examples about day care and bringing children to work interrupt the paragraph’s main line about longer weekends. Use clearer links to show how each example supports your position, and vary transitions while keeping paragraph focus tight.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “psychological health,” “mental well-being,” “support system,” “social fabric” and “physical activities.” These choices help communicate the main argument, and the meaning remains clear. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions that limit flexibility and collocational control: “work on their mental well-being” is vague, “a cubical” is not the intended workplace term, and “maintain a balance between their work life and private life” could be expressed more naturally. Spelling and word-form slips such as “strengthing” and “day cares” also affect accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling, especially when using less familiar phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and cause-and-effect structures, as in “which would help them to deal with their psychological problems.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and articles: “Work these days have become” should be “Work these days has become,” and “Current food habits and work timings has” should be “have.” The opening also has an unnecessary comma in “I am of the opinion, that,” while “time to worker” needs an article or plural form. Review subject–verb agreement, article use and punctuation, then check long sentences for clear clause boundaries.
