Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued among individuals that employees should get a long weekend in their prospective jobs while having a short working days. I largely agree with the concept of long weekend, as it would enable the employees to plan family gatherings or short travel to other cities. However, other alternates could be adapted in addition to the longer weekends which would be discussed in this essay.

Due to technological advancements and complexity of work, most workers are over occupied in their respective job fields. Most of the job places have a schedule of 40 hours per week. This lead to have mental and physical stress on them. For example, an average IT worker use to sit in front of a desktop screen on average of 8 hours per day. This frequent screentime and sitting on a constant position would have affect on their eyes, spinal cord and migraine issues. Also most people experience insomnia so, they donot get enough sleep at night and have to wake up early in the morning to go to workplace. Subsequently, less attention would be paid to work if a person is dealing with health issues.

From my prospective, workers should get long weekend of atleast 3 days off by having short working days . Furthermore, workplaces can adapt a pragmatic approach by adopting hybrid working module. In this way, comapnies can adopt this approach by allowing their workers to work onsite for 3 days and do home office for subsequent days. This would allow the employees to relax and can have mental and physical rest by spending some quality time with their families, friends. Also, companies should provide annual leave to their employees so they could get a chance to meet their families abroad and could explore their dream places. This could lead them to have a work life balance.

In conclusion, it is generally believed that employees should get to experience short working days and extended weekends to maintain their personal and practical life. This pragmatic approach could also be adopted by having hybrid work module by companies. In this way, individuals would be able to spend their life with their loved ones by keeping a balance in their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear: you largely support a shorter working week and longer weekend, and the essay gives relevant reasons, including stress, health effects, and time with family. The example of an IT worker also helps illustrate the impact of long hours. You address the prompt directly and extend your view by suggesting hybrid work and annual leave. However, the discussion sometimes shifts from shorter working hours to other benefits, especially annual leave, without explaining how these alternatives answer the specific proposal. The hybrid-work suggestion is also not fully connected to reducing weekly hours. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how a shorter week would improve wellbeing and productivity, and develop one or two examples rather than making broad claims about workers’ health and sleep.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present reasons and proposals, and the conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress from workplace stress to possible changes, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement, while some features of stronger progression are present. However, connections are occasionally mechanical or unclear. The opening promises “other alternates,” but the relationship between shorter hours, hybrid work, and annual leave is not consistently explained. Some references, such as “This pragmatic approach,” could refer to more than one proposal. Use clearer topic sentences and explicit links showing how each suggestion supports your central argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “technological advancements,” “mental and physical stress,” “hybrid working,” and “work-life balance.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “over occupied,” “job places,” “short working days,” and “hybrid working module.” Spelling errors, including “comapnies” and “donot,” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common workplace collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “overworked,” “workplaces,” “reduced working hours,” and “hybrid working arrangement.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “as,” “while,” and “so,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “This lead to have,” “an average IT worker use to sit,” and “This frequent screentime and sitting … would have affect.” The sentence beginning “In this way, companies can adopt this approach by allowing…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between its clauses. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and revise complex sentences into clear, complete clauses before adding further complexity.
