Student answer (Band 6.0)

The working days should be made minimum and workers should have a prolonged weekend. There is an unresolvable debate among the people for this cause, however I believe that working days needs to be shortened in such a way that workers can maintain a work-life balance.

Modernisation and technological advancements have initiated a race among the individuals to excel in all sectors of life. People are more reluctant to spend their time with friends and family rather prefer to work diligently at no cost. They are found occupied in their workspace more than in family gatherings. This attitude has adverse effects on health and social life. The increased rate of stress, social anxiety and fatigue are the results of work overload. Moreover, relationship issues arise if one partner keeps himself busy all the time in his office and don't pay much attention to his partner or children. Due to shorter working week, roads would be less crowded due to reduced number of cars driving on it. Hence, less accidents as well as less pollution would be the outcome.

In contrast, shorter working weeks has its own disadvantages. It involves a considerable number of factors including socio-economic aspects, low wages due to less work that may lead to poverty. Additionally another significant problem may arise as was observed in developing countries in the recent years. This may include robbery, low self-esteem and low quality of life due to limited access to facilities.

However, if a person knows he has limited time to work in a week, he would hardwork with more passion and enthusiasam and be productive in this time period. Hence more time and money can be invested later in making onself relaxed and physically fit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you support a shorter working week because it could improve work–life balance, health and relationships. You also address the opposing view by mentioning possible lower wages and poverty, so the response covers both sides of the question. The discussion of stress and family life is relevant, and the point about workers becoming more productive with limited time begins to explain how shorter hours might work. However, some claims are asserted rather than supported: the link between shorter weeks and robbery or low self-esteem is unclear, and the productivity point would benefit from a concrete example. This meets the task well overall, but fuller explanation and more convincing support would strengthen the argument further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting shorter hours, a counterargument, and a concluding point. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In contrast,” and “Hence” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the final paragraph begins with “However” but does not clearly resolve the counterargument or restate your position, so the ending feels abrupt. Some connections are also difficult to follow: the move from poverty to “robbery, low self-esteem and low quality of life” needs explanation, and the road-safety point is inserted without a clear link to the main argument. Use topic sentences and clearer transitions to make the progression more consistent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “work-life balance,” “technological advancements,” “social anxiety,” and “socio-economic aspects.” These choices show an attempt to use more formal and less common language, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “working days should be made minimum,” “at no cost,” and “hardwork with more passion.” There are also spelling errors in “enthusiasam” and “onself.” Aim for precise, natural collocations rather than choosing formal-sounding phrases that do not fit the intended meaning. More accurate wording would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures, as in “if a person knows he has limited time to work in a week…” and “if one partner keeps himself busy…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “working days needs to be shortened” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “shorter working weeks has” should use a plural verb. In “one partner … don't pay,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and the opening sentence has an unclear construction. Review agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries, then proofread for punctuation. Greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
