Student answer (Band 6.5)

Limitation of working days and extension of weekends for workers has been a point of debate among the experts of different fields whereas it has my disagreement.

While some suggest this development will impose a positive impact, my opinion contradicts with this statement. A compelling reason for this is that the present standard work schedule for workers all over the globe comprises of 5 working days and 2 holidays (weekend). This is quite apposite as workers get 2 consecutive days of resting after 5 arduos working days. Not to mention, workers are also granted additional public holidays respective to their country. For instance, employees and labourers are not required to work on labour day which occurs on 1st of May along with the independence day holidays and religious events like Christmas and Eid.

These extra holidays provide rest and leisure to hard working employees and ensure they get complete rest.

Moreover workers are also granted leaves as per their needs during the month for a week or so depending on the employers. One instance, worth of mentioning is that female workers are provided paid maternity leaves in almost all countries and some companies also offer to pay their hospital bills ensuring convenience for their employees. This practice is quite common in countries like China and Japan. So it is evident that the workers already enjoy many benefits in terms of holidays.

In contrast to this, many suggest that extension of holidays or weekends might be a positive development as workers will get extra time to relax from labourious tasks and will ease their work load to some extent. Further, they believe it might enable the individuals to maintain the perfect work life balance.

To counclude, extension of weekends and shortening of working week might prove detrimental to the economy and incite the workers to become lethargic as a well known proverb is stated (Excess of everything is bad ).The workers are granted an adequate amount of holidays in the present system and do not require any more of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you disagree with shortening the working week, and the response stays focused on the topic. You support your view with points about existing weekends, public holidays and leave, including examples such as maternity leave and national or religious holidays. You also acknowledge the opposing view that longer weekends could improve relaxation and work–life balance, which helps address both sides of the question. However, the main case relies heavily on the claim that current benefits are sufficient; the link between these benefits and why the working week should not be shortened could be explained more fully. The possible economic harm and worker lethargy in the conclusion are asserted rather than supported. Developing these points with specific reasoning or evidence would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your disagreement, the body presents supporting reasons and an opposing view, and the conclusion restates your position. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In contrast to this” clarify the relationship between ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening sentence is difficult to follow, and “One instance, worth of mentioning” introduces an example awkwardly. The paragraph about leave also shifts from general leave to maternity benefits without clearly explaining how this supports the central argument. Use more direct topic sentences and make the link between each example and your position explicit; this would create more consistently logical progression and less mechanical linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably broad range of vocabulary for the topic, including “consecutive,” “public holidays,” “maternity leaves,” “work life balance” and “detrimental.” These choices allow you to discuss workplace benefits and possible effects, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “limitation of working days,” “impose a positive impact,” “apposite,” and “labourious tasks” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling and word-form slips such as “arduos” and “counclude” also reduce precision. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than choosing a more elaborate word when a simpler one fits. Proofreading for spelling and consistent forms would further strengthen control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “whereas” and “which,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following your meaning. For example, “my opinion contradicts with this statement” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “comprises of” and “workers are also granted leaves as per their needs during the month for a week or so depending on the employers” show problems with sentence construction and grammatical relationships. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, particularly around the final parenthetical proverb. Review verb patterns, articles and sentence boundaries, and simplify sentences when several ideas are being combined. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
