Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that employees should get more holidays to spend quality time with their family rather than investing all of their precious time in work. From my perspective, i agree with this trend as getting longer weekends can lead to spending more quality time with families also getting shorter working days can help employees in managing themselves and fulfilling their responsibilities.

On the one hand, a shorter working week allows workers to spend more quality time with their families. In this way they can interact in a better way with each-other. As a result, family bonding improves and creates a more supportive family environment. Furthermore, if a worker gets more days off then they can manage all things in a better way. During the working weeks, the employees may struggle to balance the household chores with their responsibilities. But if they get enough days off then they can certainly fulfill their duties. Thus, getting longer weekends are beneficial with regard to pursuing hobbies and fulfilling personal tasks. To illustrate, a father working in a company for the whole week may not get enough time to invest at home but if he get more days off then he would be able to spend more time with his families and friends as well as getting enough time to look for his duties.

On the other hand, shortening the working hours can bring numerous disadvantages for the employees and employers alike. Some workers are paid according to their working hours. If people are given more days off then they will get less salary. As a result, this could make it difficult for them to manage their expenses such as rent, food and transport. Moreover, this can lead to increased work load and pressure. As they might have to complete the same amount of work in fewer days. Therefore, rather then reducing stress short week can lead more work load. For instance, a person who used to work 7 hours a week would now have to work for 9 hours.

In conclusion, Although shorter week days can lead to a lot of challenges, i believe that longer weekends can have a positive impact on the life of the workers as they would get more time to spend with their loved ones and looking after themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you support longer weekends, and you address both the benefits and possible drawbacks. The family-time and household-responsibility points are relevant, with an example about a father working throughout the week. You also acknowledge reduced pay and pressure from completing the same workload in fewer days, which gives the discussion some balance. However, the support is uneven: the benefits are explained in more detail, while the financial and workload concerns are asserted rather than explored. The example about working seven versus nine hours is also unclear and does not fully show how a shorter week would operate. Develop each main point with a more precise explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting considerations, and a conclusion that restates your view. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. Within paragraphs, ideas generally progress from a claim to an explanation or example. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For example, “Furthermore, if a worker gets more days off” shifts from family bonding to personal responsibilities without a clear transition, and “Therefore, rather then reducing stress short week can lead more work load” is difficult to follow. Use clearer links between related points and ensure pronouns and references identify their meaning; this would make cohesion less mechanical and more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You communicate the main ideas using an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “family bonding,” “household chores,” “responsibilities,” and “work load and pressure.” Some less common expressions are attempted, but several choices or collocations are awkward or repetitive, such as “investing all of their precious time in work,” “interact in a better way,” and “fulfill their duties.” “Getting more days off” and “spend more quality time” recur, limiting flexibility. There are also word-form or spelling issues, including “rather then” and “each-other.” Aim for more natural combinations and vary repeated phrases—for example, use “maintain a healthy work–life balance” or “meet household obligations.” These refinements would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent without changing your clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if they get enough days off then they can certainly fulfill their duties” and a subordinate clause beginning “As they might have to complete the same amount of work in fewer days.” Most meaning remains clear, although some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “longer weekends are beneficial” after the singular subject “getting longer weekends,” “if he get” instead of “if he gets,” and “a lot of challenges” following the uncapitalised “Although” after a comma. The final sentence also has an incomplete parallel structure: “spend more time … and looking after themselves.” Check subject–verb agreement, sentence boundaries, and parallel forms, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
