IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a large section of people that believe that the workers should be given a longer weekend because they are unable to have a proper work-life balance.I strongly disagree because i feel the current system of working from mondays to fridays and relaxing on saturdays and sundays establishes a efficient way of completing tasks.

There are several reasons why this is not practical one of them being, if this is encouraged people will try to take more days off in the future references to this new system and then at that time they will say that the system is still not enough for them and they want more free days to themselves. For example, if the working days are kept from mondays to thrusdays then after five years people will argue that a three-day long weekend is not enough as they are still working more days than they are relaxing and in turn want a four-day long weekend.

Another reason is that once such demands are approved the efficiency of work would be hampered because a whole day of work will be reduced. For example, a contractor who usually finishes a task in two week i.e, ten working days will now have only 8 working days and have to shift his work in another week to accomodate for two lost days which will reduce the overall efficiency and result in losses incurred by the contractor.

In conclusion, I would say that a longer weekend sounds good but is not at all practical for any company or private contractor, as it rewards wrongful demands and reduces the efficiency of the work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly disagree with a shorter working week, and the conclusion restates that view. You give two relevant reasons—possible future demands for still more time off and reduced work efficiency—and support them with examples involving a four-day week and a contractor’s schedule. This addresses the task and shows some development. However, the first example relies on a speculative chain of demands, while the contractor example focuses on lost working days without considering whether hours or output could be reorganised. To strengthen the response, explain why these outcomes are likely and acknowledge a possible benefit of longer weekends before showing why it does not outweigh your concerns. That would make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion summarises your position. The examples generally follow the points they are intended to support, so the overall progression is understandable. Cohesion is less controlled within sentences, however. The first body paragraph begins, “There are several reasons why this is not practical one of them being,” which joins ideas without clear punctuation, and the long example that follows is difficult to navigate. Connectors such as “For example,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” help, but the argument depends heavily on these explicit signals. Use clearer topic sentences, divide long sentences, and make references such as “this system” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including relevant terms such as “work-life balance,” “efficiency,” and “overall efficiency.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, for example “demands are approved” and “losses incurred.” However, several choices are awkward or imprecise: “a large section of people,” “in the future references to this new system,” and “wrongful demands” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling and word-form errors, including “thrusdays” and “accomodate,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; a broader, more natural range would make the reasoning clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if the working days are kept…” and a reason clause introduced by “because.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For instance, “a efficient way” needs the article “an,” and “a contractor who usually finishes a task in two week” has a plural error. The opening also runs “balance.I strongly disagree” together, and several long sentences need clearer boundaries. Capitalise “I” and the days of the week, and use punctuation to separate clauses. More consistent control of articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
