Student answer (Band 6.5)

The working week should be shorter and employees should have more holidays. I agree with the statement because a longer weekend will allow employees to improve their work-life balance and will offer more time to enjoy thier personal life.

The first reason is that a shorter working week will significantly offer better work-life balance for workers by giving them additional free time. More holidays during a week means extra time for workers to enjoy their lives by doing what they want, pursuing hobbies, and even improving their education and knowledge by attending weekend classes. When the working week starts again, these workers who are fully energized and equipped with additional knowledge can significantly increase the productivity in the workplace. In 2025, Germany introduced three-day weekend and results suggested that it significantly increased workers' performance and productivity.

The another reason is that a longer weekend offers workers additional time to enjoy their personal life. This could be a solution to the declining birth rate which is a pressing issue in many developed countries. When people do not have enough time to enjoy their lives, go to date, and spend quality time with thier loved ones, the marriage rate and birth rate will naturally decline. A longer weekend will provide working adults with more time to focus on their family life. A recent study found out that one of the main reasons why families are chosing not to get children is the lack of time.

In conculsion, I completely agree that people in the workforce deserve to enjoy a longer weekend because I believe that this will lead to better work-life balance and ultimately enhancing the productivity. Additionally, this will offer employees more time to focus on their family life and could eventually be a solution to the issue of declining birth rate among developed countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that the working week should be shorter, and you give two relevant reasons—improved work-life balance and more time for family life. The productivity example and the discussion of declining birth rates help support your argument. This meets the task well, but the ideas are not equally developed. The claim about Germany’s three-day weekend is presented briefly, without explaining how the change was implemented or what the reported results were. Similarly, the link between longer weekends and birth rates is plausible but broad, and the study is not identified or explained. Developing these examples and qualifying general claims would make the support more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Topic sentences such as “The first reason” and “The another reason” make the paragraph purposes easy to follow, and ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. However, some linking is mechanical, and repeated references to “additional time” and “longer weekend” make the flow less flexible. The transition from personal time to declining birth rates also needs a clearer explanation of the connection. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make references more precise—for example, clarify who “these workers” refers to and how the cited evidence supports the point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “work-life balance,” “pursuing hobbies,” “productivity,” and “declining birth rate.” These choices communicate your main ideas clearly, and some topic-specific language adds precision. However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce naturalness: “more holidays during a week” is not the usual way to describe a shorter working week, while “go to date” and “get children” are awkward expressions. There are also spelling errors such as “thier,” “chosing,” and “conculsion.” Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; this would make your vocabulary sound more controlled without changing the substance of your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional sentence (“When the working week starts again…”) and a relative clause (“which is a pressing issue…”). Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical problems persist, however. “The another reason” has an incorrect determiner, and “a longer weekend…could eventually be a solution” is followed by “ultimately enhancing the productivity,” which does not fit smoothly with the sentence structure. In “A recent study found out that…,” the reporting clause is understandable, but the sentence would benefit from clearer, more controlled construction. Review articles and sentence links, and check that verb forms fit the structure of each sentence.
