Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is sometimes argued that working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. I disagree to this point of view, beacuse this will not only affect the efficiency of the work but it will also make the workers more indolent.

One of the most crucial aspect that raise the standard of work is the working hours that how much its workers are giving time to their jobs. If working week will become shorter and workers have long weekends then less work would be done by the workers which will effect the progress. For Instance, in 2017 Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan tried to impose a law which included friday in weekend but several companies opposed this law because it will severely slow down their outcomes. Another reason is that some workers who are not passionate about their jobs, and their focus is just on how to complete their work hours and sometimes such workers leave the work without completing it beacuse they have reached their time limit so, in this situation the owner have to wait untill the next week to get final results.

Another adverse effect of the long weekend would be that, people would become more lethargic. They would become more lazy and would wait for the workling days to end, so that they can enjoy their weekend. For example, a person who works for 3 days a week and 4 days in resting, it will become difficult for him to work for even 3 days because he would get used to his sluggish routine.

In conclusion, i disagree with this perspective that working week should be shorter than weekend because less work means less progress and especially for a country which is under development, this would also effect its economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you disagree because shorter working weeks could reduce productivity and economic progress. You support this with relevant points, including the example of a proposed change to Pakistan’s weekend and the possibility of unfinished work being delayed. However, the argument that longer weekends make people “more lethargic” is asserted rather than convincingly explained, and the example of someone working three days does not establish that this would happen generally. The discussion also focuses mainly on reduced output; explaining how shorter hours affect efficiency, or acknowledging possible benefits before rebutting them, would make the response more fully developed and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The ideas generally progress from workplace productivity to workers’ attitudes, and signposts such as “Another adverse effect” help readers follow this sequence. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The first body paragraph combines the national policy example with a separate point about employees leaving unfinished work, so the relationship between these examples could be made clearer. Linking phrases such as “For Instance” and “In conclusion” are also somewhat mechanical. Organising each paragraph around one main claim and explicitly explaining how each example supports it would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “efficiency,” “progress,” “passionate,” “lethargic,” and “economic growth,” which allows you to discuss both workplace and national effects. There are also attempts at less common language, such as “sluggish routine,” though some choices are inaccurate or repetitive. “Indolent” and “lazy” express nearly the same idea, while “effect the progress” uses the wrong word form and “working week” is repeated frequently. Spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “untill,” and “workling” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling; for example, use “affect productivity” and “delay progress” rather than less natural combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If working week will become shorter…” and a relative clause in “workers who are not passionate about their jobs.” This shows some range, but control is uneven, and several sentence patterns contain errors. Examples include “working week should be shorter” (missing an article), “One of the most crucial aspect…that raise” (agreement and plural form), and “the owner have to wait” (subject–verb agreement). The conditional sentence also needs a more suitable verb form, such as “If the working week became shorter, less work would be done.” Review articles, agreement, and conditional structures, and use punctuation to separate long sentences more clearly.
