Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely argued that the employees should have longer weekend than working weeks days. This essay disagrees with the statement because it will affect the businesses income and individuals will not utilize their time efficiently.

Firstly, when people will work for a short period of time, businesses will not earn sufficiently. They will find it difficult to pay the expenses and for other leisure activities. For example, a small coffee shop close at 4.00 PM than usually at 9.00 PM, the customers will not come then and businesses will be in losses. In addition, mostly people prefer to go to restaurants or tea bar in the evening. It is the peak time for them because customers will come more, and businesses will earn good profit.

Although, individuals will become happy to work less, it will affect their productivity. As workers get more time on week days, they will spend hours and hours on social media because mobile phones is the most usable product in free time. Their less working hours will impact badly on their both mental and physical health. For example, if an employee works for 4 days in a week, he will spend other 3 days on the smartphones. This will not be productive for them because they will become lazy and consume more time on scrolling which will lead towards them stress.

In conclusion, shorter working days will affect negatively on businesses and individuals because companies will be in losses and workers will not become productive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree because shorter working weeks may harm businesses and workers. Both reasons are relevant, and the coffee-shop example helps illustrate the business argument. However, the discussion does not fully address the proposal’s central comparison between working time and weekend length: the business point focuses mainly on opening hours, while the claim that extra free time harms workers relies on an unsupported assumption that they will spend it on social media. Explain how reduced working hours would affect business operations, and acknowledge that workers could use longer weekends for rest, family or other beneficial activities before explaining why you still disagree. This would make the ideas more fully developed and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “For example” help show how points relate. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through distinct paragraph purposes. To make progression more consistently smooth, ensure each example directly supports the paragraph’s main claim and use transitions more naturally; for instance, “Although” at the start of the second body paragraph is not followed by a clear contrast. The conclusion also repeats the introduction rather than drawing together the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “businesses,” “productivity,” “mental and physical health,” and “peak time.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “leisure activities” and “consume more time on scrolling.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the argument less precise: “businesses will be in losses,” “tea bar,” and “the most usable product” are examples. Repetition of “businesses,” “customers,” and “time” also limits flexibility. Build a more reliable range of collocations for work and economic effects, and check whether each phrase sounds natural in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if an employee works for 4 days in a week, he will spend other 3 days…” and a subordinate clause beginning “because.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “when people will work” should use a present form after “when,” “businesses will not earn sufficiently” has an awkward verb pattern, and “mobile phones is” has subject–verb disagreement. The opening sentence also needs an article and a more accurate plural construction. Review these patterns and vary sentence structures while maintaining control; clearer, more accurate clauses would strengthen the response.
