Student answer (Band 6.0)

There always has been a debate about whether the working hours must be reduced to provide the working individuals a long weekend while others ague that there should be no change in the working schedule. This essay will discuss both points of view along with arguments that why there should be a balanced approach between both sides.

The reduction in business working hours can't be implemented in various industries which operates 24/7 in a week, month or year .As the decreased working hours may lead to shortage of staff resulting in disruption of the operations. One of the considerable examples of the industries which operates 24 hours includes healthcare and aviation.Consequently, people may be concerned with travelling and treatment issues by providing the working personnel a long weekend.

On the contrary, it is crucial to provide the workforce a sufficent break from their duties in order to maintain their mental and physical health. The individuals working in rotational shifts are more prone to stress level than those of working in fixed working schedule. Therefore, there must be a well developed roster to keep the employees engaged and motivated towards the assigned tasks.Additionally, a signifcant number of individuals migrate or recommute to other cities for their jobs.Consequently, providing a long weekends to such workforce can reduce their homesickness.

According to my perspective, government should develop an efficient policy for working hours which can be beneficial for both native and immigrant workforce. To ensure the implementation of the policy there must be a regulatory authority which monitors the duty time limit of working individuals.Furthermore, organizations must emphasize on sick leaves as well as monthly leaves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the topic by considering operational concerns as well as workers’ wellbeing, and your final paragraph proposes a policy-based compromise. The examples of healthcare and aviation help make the staffing argument relevant, while the discussion of stress and homesickness gives a reason for longer breaks. However, the task asks whether you agree or disagree, and your position is not stated clearly until “According to my perspective”; even there, you recommend an efficient policy rather than directly saying whether the working week should be shorter. Some points, such as the effect of long weekends on travel and treatment, are also asserted without enough explanation. State your view clearly in the introduction and develop the strongest supporting reasons with specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, contrasting discussion paragraphs, and a concluding recommendation. Transitions such as “On the contrary,” “Additionally,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas, and the reader can follow the broad progression. To make the organisation more effective, ensure each paragraph develops one central point rather than moving quickly between several claims. For example, the paragraph about workers’ wellbeing shifts from stress and rosters to migration and homesickness without fully connecting these ideas. Some linking phrases, including “Consequently,” are repeated and do not always show a clear cause-and-effect relationship. Clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing would make the cohesion less mechanical and the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “rotational shifts,” “regulatory authority,” “workforce,” and “implementation.” These choices show an effort to use formal language and discuss employment policy. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “a long weekend,” “working individuals,” and “recommute to other cities” do not convey the intended meaning naturally in context. There are also spelling errors such as “ague,” “sufficent,” and “signifcant.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would strengthen the response. Prefer straightforward, accurate phrasing over formal-sounding expressions when you are unsure of a word’s use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “industries which operates 24/7” and a purpose clause in “in order to maintain their mental and physical health.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “industries which operates” and “industries which operates 24 hours”; the plural subject requires “operate.” Other examples include “provide the workforce a sufficient break” and “providing a long weekends,” where article, number, or sentence-pattern choices need attention. Punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries are also inconsistent. Review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, then proofread each sentence while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
