Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, people believe that the working week should be shorter, while some others think that workers should have a longer weekend. I completely agree with this view because workers should have time to spend with their family and friends. Furthermore governments should provide two days of minimum weekend for employees to relax from their work pressure.

First, one major reason is that workers should have a working week shorter because every working person spends more time in the workplace compared to their home, whereas they do not have enough time and energy after they returning from work to spend with their family and friends. For example, my father who works as a software engineer, he mostly spend his time in office and with assigned projects. Moreover, he do not have enough time to spend with my family. However, the governments should be shorter the working week in every sector to workers to reduce stress and they may have free time to be with their family.

Furthermore, another important point is that workers should have a longer weekend because employees may feel stressless and relaxed when they get extra time in weekends. For instance, one of my friend who works for whole five days in a week he feel exhausted and his company provides two days of weekend for him to get relax himself. In my opinion, employees should need longer weekend regardless their working sector. As a result, workers may focus more on work when they get longer weekend.

In conclusion, working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend to spend equally with their family and stress free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: “I completely agree,” and the response addresses both shorter working weeks and longer weekends. The reasons—more time with family and friends, reduced stress, and improved focus—are relevant, and the examples about your father and your friend help make the discussion personal. However, the two main ideas are not developed equally or in much depth. The first example explains your father’s workload but does not show specifically how a shorter week would improve his situation; the second mainly repeats that a longer weekend helps workers relax. Explain the likely benefits more fully and connect each example directly to your argument. The conclusion restates your view but could summarise the key reasons more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs each focus on a relevant reason, and signposts such as “First,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the overall direction. However, some linking is mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear. For example, “However” introduces a point that continues the argument rather than contrasting with it, while “As a result” makes a broad claim about focus without explaining the connection. Some references are also unclear, as in “spend with my family,” where the intended family member or group is not expressed consistently. Use transitions only when their logical function fits, and build clearer links between each example and the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “work pressure,” “exhausted,” “relaxed” and “assigned projects.” There are also attempts to express the topic in different ways, such as “working week” and “weekend.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “stressless,” “get relax himself” and “should be shorter the working week.” Repetition of “workers,” “weekend” and “time” also limits flexibility. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your position, but they make parts of the response less natural and precise. Practise common collocations for employment and wellbeing, and check whether each chosen word fits the grammatical pattern in which it appears.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison with “whereas” and a conditional idea about workers focusing more after a longer weekend. This gives the response some structural variety, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “after they returning” needs a correctly formed verb, “he mostly spend” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “he do not have” should use the matching auxiliary. The example beginning “my father who works as a software engineer, he…” also has an awkward sentence structure. Review verb forms after time expressions, agreement with singular subjects, and how to punctuate and integrate relative clauses. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to read.
