Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that working week should be shorter and workers should be given longer weekend. I also agree with this opinion.

Working long shifts everyday can be really exhausting and take away from the service a worker can provide. If someone is doing a 9 to 5 job then they have to realistically spend 10 hours just at work since they have to get ready for work and go to their work place which takes about 1-2 hours. Therefore , they spend 50 hours on a week ( if they get 2 days off ) working. That leaves very little time for their own hobbies and family. As a result, they get frustrated and depressed. Which directly affect their workflow.

If the working days in a week were reduced to three or four days then the workers would have much more time for themselves and their family which will result in improved mentality among the workers. Therefore, they will be able to perform better in their work and give full focus on it. Also the amount of effort a common worker has to give for their pay is much more than a business owner or manager. The business owners can enjoy a luxurious lifestyle without putting nearly as much hardwork creating a massive gap between them and common workers.

In conclusion , by making working week shorter and giving more rest to the worker can lead to a happier mental health for the workers and better workflow. Leading to less disparity between common workers and wealthy business owners.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: “I also agree,” and the conclusion restates the benefits you see in a shorter week. You address the main issue by linking longer working hours with exhaustion and reduced time for family, then arguing that fewer workdays could improve workers’ wellbeing and performance. The example of a 9-to-5 job helps make the time pressure concrete. However, some points are less fully developed: the claim that shorter weeks would reduce the gap between workers and business owners is introduced without explaining how this would happen. The discussion also focuses mainly on benefits, with little consideration of practical limits or how a shorter week might affect employers. The response shows some development, but fuller support would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop reasons, and a conclusion summarises your position. Ideas generally progress from the effects of long hours to the possible benefits of fewer working days. Linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Therefore” help show relationships between points. At times, however, these transitions feel repetitive or do not connect the sentences smoothly. For example, “Which directly affect their workflow” is separated as a fragment, and the final paragraph begins “Leading to,” which also leaves the relationship incomplete. The shift to inequality between workers and business owners is abrupt. Use complete sentences and clearer links between that point and your argument about shorter working weeks.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “exhausting,” “hobbies,” “frustrated,” and “workflow.” There are also attempts to express more complex concepts, such as “disparity” and “mentality.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits the clarity and flexibility of the vocabulary. For instance, “improved mentality” would be more naturally expressed as improved wellbeing or morale, while “give full focus on it” is not idiomatic. “Hardwork” is incorrectly written as one word, and “luxurious lifestyle” is a broad phrase that could be made more precise in this context. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding ambitious vocabulary where the phrasing is uncertain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional forms such as “If the working days in a week were reduced…” and cause-and-effect sentences. The main meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. In “Which directly affect their workflow,” the clause is a fragment and the verb does not agree with the singular idea; connect it to the preceding sentence and use “affects.” “By making working week shorter … can lead” also has an unclear grammatical subject, and “a happier mental health” has an incorrect article and structure. There are further issues with articles and sentence boundaries, including “working week” and the comma before “Therefore.” Review sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement, and article use while continuing to practise complex sentences.
