Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, there has been an increasing debate on whether workers should get shorter working week and longer weekend. I strongly agree with the view that working week should be reduced and weekend should be longer because it will increase the workers' productivity and quality of production along with the improvement of workers' mental and physical health.

This essay will state the multiple benefits of having longer weekend and reduced working weeks.

The quality of work is improtant for any industry and to ensure that we should first ensure the working condition of workers. The workers must be healthy both mentaly and physically in order to work effectively. For instance, if workers work for too long, they will be ruined and will make mistakes which will eventually drop the quality of production of that company. To solve this issue, workers' should provided shorter working week, which will give them a plenty of time to refresh their mind by spending time with family or friends.

Additionally, workers should provided longer weekend, so that they can enjoy their life and feel fresh while working after the weekend. This will ensure better life quality for workers and their rights as well. For example,if workers are provided longer weekends they will use that time to enjoy their life and refresh their mind, which will keep them healthy and productive for their work. Consequently, the company will be benefited as they will be able to produce more qualtiy product or service.

To conclude, opponents may argue that increasing weekend and reducing working week may reduce the production, but I firmly believe that this will increase the quality of production and ensure the better life for workers. As a result, the company or industry will be benefited too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree with a shorter working week and longer weekends, and the conclusion maintains this view while acknowledging an opposing argument. You give relevant reasons, especially improved worker health and productivity, and illustrate them with examples of fatigue leading to mistakes and time spent with family. This addresses the task well. However, the two body paragraphs largely repeat the same link between rest, health and productivity, and the claim that companies will produce more is asserted rather than explained. To develop the argument further, distinguish the benefits of fewer working days from those of a longer weekend, and support each with a more specific example or explanation of how the change would work.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from worker health to the benefits of longer weekends is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “For instance” and “To conclude” help guide the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. At times, however, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and ideas are repeated rather than developed: both body paragraphs explain that rest refreshes workers and improves productivity. The opening sentence of the second paragraph also repeats the essay’s main claim instead of advancing the argument. Use referencing and transitions more flexibly, and make each paragraph contribute a distinct reason or consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including relevant terms such as “productivity,” “quality of production,” “working condition” and “mental and physical health.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, for example “opponents may argue” and “Consequently.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “workers,” “work,” “quality” and “weekend,” while several word-choice and collocation errors reduce naturalness. Examples include “ruined” for workers who are exhausted, “a plenty of time,” and “more qualtiy product or service.” Spelling errors such as “improtant,” “mentaly” and “qualtiy” are also noticeable. Build a wider set of accurate collocations and proofread spelling to make your meaning more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and result clauses: “if workers work for too long, they will be ruined” and “which will keep them healthy and productive.” This shows some range, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms occur across the response. For example, “workers should provided” needs a passive form (“should be provided with”), while “the working week should be reduced” requires an article in the opening. There are also problems with possessives and punctuation, such as “workers' should” and the missing space after “For example,”. Some sentences are awkwardly joined or constructed, which limits accuracy. Practise passive structures, articles and possessives, then check each sentence for a complete and correctly formed clause.
