Student answer (Band 6.0)

I partly agree with that statement. The working days should be reduced but it has some negative impacts too. Employees should be assigned a longer weekend, depending on their progress throughout the week. It has some advantages as well as some drawbacks.

Proponents of shorter working period think that the organisation or firm they are working in, should look after their employees. Their argument for prolonged weekend is that an employee should have enough time to spend with his family and to relax his mind after a hectic job week. Because in most countries the staff gets only a day-off throughout the week. This helps them to spend a day with their loved ones. But sometime it is not enough because if you happened to have some work on weekend like, doing some household job or solving an home issue then you will not have left enough time to spend with your family or to relax your mind. So, they think that the weekend should be extended.

However there are some important aspects which one in the favor of extended holidays needs to consider. Prolonged weekends can affect an organisation's revenue. They will have to invest more in order to provide additional days off. Along with the organisation it can also effect the labours individually. They may get lazy during the stretched weekends and then they will definitely find it difficult to go on a job after a long weekend. It can be a hurdle in the development of a nation. It can slow down the national progress of a country. For instance, if a country has some projects going on for future development and the employees are not encouraged to burn the midnight oil, their progress would be slowed down.

To conclude that I would say both aspects are absolutely correct. So I think there should be a balance between both things rather than just favoring one side. Employees should be awarded with prolonged weekend but not very often. It will keep the labour happy and company running moderately. A balance between both aspects will moderate the situation and will keep the wheel of progress spinning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses the question and presents a clear, qualified position: you support longer weekends to some extent but argue for balance. You consider benefits such as family time and rest, as well as possible effects on company revenue and national progress. These are relevant points, but some are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that longer weekends make workers “lazy” and slow national development would be stronger with a specific explanation or example showing how reduced working time affects output. The opening also shifts toward weekends being assigned “depending on their progress,” an idea that is not developed later. Develop the main reasons more evenly and make the link between your examples and your position explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “However” and “To conclude” help signal the direction of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Because in most countries…” is a fragment, and “This helps them” has an unclear reference. The discussion also moves from individual family time to organisational revenue and then national progress without always showing how one point leads to the next. In the conclusion, “both aspects are absolutely correct” is vague. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each supporting explanation directly to its main point, and make references more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “prolonged weekend,” “hectic,” “revenue,” and “national progress.” Some less common expressions show an effort to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, word choice and collocation are not consistently natural: “effect the labours individually” appears to mean “affect workers,” while “a hurdle in the development” and “company running moderately” are imprecise. There are also spelling and form slips, including “sometime” where “sometimes” is intended. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding formal-sounding phrases. For instance, describe the possible impact on productivity directly and use consistent terms such as “employees” or “workers.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if you happened to have some work on weekend…” and a longer sentence beginning “if a country has some projects going on…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. “Because in most countries the staff gets only a day-off” is a sentence fragment, and “if you happened to have” does not fit smoothly with the surrounding general statement. Articles and agreement also need attention in phrases such as “an home issue” and “the staff gets.” Several sentences run together, as in “country. For instance,” so check spacing and sentence boundaries. Practise complete clauses and review articles, agreement, and punctuation while retaining your complex sentence attempts.
