Student answer (Band 6.0)

Work takes up most of our lives, people think that the working week of employees should be shorter and should have longer weekend. I agree with this statement because people are becoming more stressed from their work.

People's lives revolve around work most of the time. They don't get enough sleep, nutrition and rest because of long hours of working. Workers tend to extend their shift because of all the workload. For example, due to the shortness of staff some employees are forced to work overtime because no one can replace them. Working week should be shorter to give time for themselves and for their families as well. There are people who prefers to work a 12 hours shift for 3 days and in return a 4 days off from work. This can be beneficial because people can somehow rest for how many days.

I believe that workers deserve longer weekends so that they can unwind, relax and escape the stress from work. A work life balance is essential to maintain their overall well being and to stay healthy. Employers should give workers this benefit so that when they get back they can work more efficiently. A person who is stressed and deprived from sleep and nutrition cannot function properly and it can lead to negative outcomes. Some people have families and sometimes the aren't able to attend special events or family gatherings because of work, they can miss out from a lot.

In conclusion, it's important to take care of ourselves both physically and mentally. Work is important to people because this is their main source of living but they should also value their well being. People deserve to rest because of their hardwork, efforts and sacrifices they give. They should be able to give time for themselves and also to their families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that the working week should be shorter, and the conclusion reinforces the value of rest and family time. The response addresses the task with relevant reasons, including stress, health, and missing family events. The example of employees working overtime because of staff shortages helps make the argument concrete. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the 12-hour-shift arrangement is mentioned, but its benefits and connection to a shorter working week could be developed more clearly. To strengthen the response, explain how longer weekends would improve workers’ lives and employers’ outcomes, and support each main reason with a more specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with distinct themes, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from the effects of long hours to the benefits of rest and family time. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “In conclusion,” and “because” help readers follow the argument. At times, however, connections between ideas are loose: the shift pattern appears without a clear transition from the overtime example, and several sentences repeat the general point that workers need rest. Some references, such as “this benefit,” could be more precise. Group related points more tightly, use clearer transitions between examples and claims, and reduce repetition to make the progression more flexible and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss work, health, and family life, including “workload,” “overtime,” “unwind,” “well being,” and “deprived from sleep and nutrition.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some are relevant to the topic. However, several expressions are imprecise or awkwardly collocated, such as “shortness of staff,” “rest for how many days,” and “give time for themselves.” Repetition of “work,” “people,” and “rest” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural topic-specific phrasing and vary repeated terms—for example, describe staffing shortages, recovery time, and time devoted to personal or family commitments. This would make the argument more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses (“because of long hours of working”) and a conditional result (“it can lead to negative outcomes”). Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems persist. For example, the opening joins two independent clauses with a comma, “There are people who prefers” has subject–verb disagreement, and “sometimes the aren't able” contains an incorrect pronoun form. There are also issues with articles and number agreement in phrases such as “longer weekend” and “a 4 days off.” Practise checking sentence boundaries, subject–verb agreement, and singular/plural forms, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
