Student answer (Band 6.0)

As the technology services is advancing, the workload has also taking a toll on the employees. Increased work pressure has several health consequences also arising, for example, spine issues, improper ergonomics, weight gain/loss etc. So, i totally agree that working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.

Considering the IT, engineers and corporate sector all over the world, especially in Indian has the most working hours. The meetings even get extended after reaching home from work as well. For example, my cousin brother who is an telecommunication engineer, has to even work for the night somedays attending meetings, calls and finishing the upcoming projects .His work also includes training the upcoming new comers .This is too much of responsibilty for a single person to handle.

The other occupation which I feel has longer work hours in a week is Medical profession, wherein the doctors even the residents have to finish the work hours in addition to their night duties. They go for days with less sleeping hours for days sometimes. For exmaple, a surgery resident doing a night duty may also have to assist in a surgery the next morning if required.

In countries such as Netherlands, Denmark ,Germany etc, there are less work hours per week i.e ranging from 24-36 hours depending on their jobs. They spend a very peaceful life and even get time for themsleves and their family. They can have a good work-life balance. This plays a very important role in their mental health . Having longer weekends can also give a benefit of focusing on a new hobby or attending new workshops for further learning and developing skills.

To summarize that shorter week would benefit the health the most and also keep the mental health stable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you “totally agree” that the working week should be shorter, and the conclusion returns to the health benefits. You address the prompt with relevant examples from technology and medicine, including your cousin’s night meetings and a resident’s duties. The discussion of work-related health effects and work-life balance also supports your view. This meets the task well, while showing some of the development expected at a stronger level. However, several points are asserted rather than explained: for instance, the comparison with European countries does not show how shorter hours produce the benefits claimed, and the proposed link between longer weekends and learning new skills could be developed further. Explain these connections and qualify broad claims with specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces a clear opinion, gives separate examples from corporate work and medicine, then discusses shorter working weeks in Europe before concluding. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these main stages, and phrases such as “For example” and “To summarize” signal examples and closure. At this level, however, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. The opening “Considering the IT, engineers and corporate sector” does not clearly establish the relationship between the groups, while “They spend a very peaceful life” leaves the reference of “they” somewhat broad. Some ideas also feel listed rather than connected, particularly the health effects and the later benefits of hobbies and workshops. Use clearer topic sentences and explicit links explaining how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “work pressure,” “health consequences,” “work-life balance,” “mental health,” and “responsibility.” These choices make your main ideas understandable, and terms such as “telecommunication engineer” and “surgery resident” add relevant specificity. You also attempt more formal vocabulary, though some choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the workload has also taking a toll,” “improper ergonomics,” and “a very peaceful life.” Spelling errors including “responsibilty,” “exmaple,” and “themsleves” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise combinations rather than translating phrases directly: for example, describe employees as experiencing “physical strain” or having “limited time to recover.” Proofreading for spelling and word forms would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example (“if required”) and clauses explaining what workers do. The overall meaning is generally clear, and the response includes some correctly formed sentences, such as “This plays a very important role in their mental health.” However, some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “the workload has also taking” should be “the workload has also taken”; “in Indian” needs a grammatical country reference, and “an telecommunication engineer” has an article error. The sentence beginning “The other occupation…” also shifts into an unclear construction (“wherein the doctors even the residents have to finish the work hours”). Punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries are inconsistent. Review verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, and simplify constructions when needed to maintain control.
