The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the formation of an essential biofuel known as ethanol. Ethanol is very important for the functioning of the world we live in today. It is responsible for various industries including transportation.

The production starts with energy in the form of sunlight and carbon dioxide. This energy gets converts into glucose and provides nutrition for the growing of plants and trees. These trees are then harvested by farmers and sent into pre-processing.

Pre-processing involves large machinery to transform plants into cellulose which is later used in chemical processing. Various sugars are then composed and microbes are added into these sugars. With multiple chemical reactions taking place, the biofuel is then formed in a state of gas. Ethanol is produced and used in many modes of transportation such as cars, trucks and even flights.

These conveyances convert the biofuel into carbon dioxide and release it back into the air. The cycle continues as the carbon dioxide released again converts into energy for various plants.
