IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The cycle method illustrates the processing method of ethonol from Plants to produce Biofuel.

Overall, there are eight steps to process. Firstly Plants and trees play important role because these are the primary step. Second step is to harvesting these growing trees and plants. Then farmer took these cutting peices of trees for pre-processing process where peices are crushed into smaller particles to produce Cellulose. Next step is to process Cellulose into sugars compound using chemicals in laboratory.

Furthermore, Microbes are the bacteria which are added into Sugars small compound to make Ethonol. Ethonol is used in various ways. one of the major advantage is to used in vehicles as a fuel such as Cars, Trucks, Aeroplane etc.

However, ethanol ejects lots of carbon dioxide which pollutes environment but these carbon dioxide are absorbed by plants and trees. So this lifecycle goes on as Plants and trees inhale Sunlight, Energy and Carbon dioxide and on the other hand release oxygen which human beings inhale.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main stages of the ethanol production process, from the initial harvesting of plants to the final usage. However, the description is somewhat simplistic and lacks a clear overview of the process as a whole. While the steps are identified, the response misses some technical details shown in the diagram, such as the specific role of yeast or the fermentation stage, instead using general terms like 'chemicals'. The final paragraph discusses the environmental impact, which is relevant, but the focus should remain more strictly on the mechanical/chemical process depicted in the diagram. To improve, ensure all key stages are clearly described without adding external information not present in the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Second step', 'Next step', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The logical flow is generally clear, moving from the raw material to the final product. However, the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the phrase 'these are the primary step', where the pronoun 'these' lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to specific nouns would enhance the overall cohesion of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'ethonol' (repeatedly) instead of 'ethanol', and 'peices' instead of 'pieces'. The word choice is sometimes repetitive or slightly unnatural, such as 'cycle method' or 'sugars small compound'. While the student manages to convey the main ideas, the lack of technical vocabulary related to the process (e.g., 'fermentation', 'distillation', 'biomass') limits the score. To reach a higher band, focus on accurate spelling and incorporating more precise, subject-specific terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Plants and trees play important role', 'one of the major advantage is to used'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing ('these carbon dioxide are absorbed'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels clunky. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles, pluralization, and verb forms, before attempting more complex sentence structures.
