The above diagram shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.

Overall, ethanol production is a cyclical process consisting of several stages, beginning with the growth of plants using sunlight and carbon dioxide and ending with the use of ethanol as a fuel. Notably, the carbon dioxide released during the production and consumption is reabsorbed by plants, creating a continuous cycle.

Initially, plants and trees grow by using sunlight together carbon dioxide from atmosphere. Once the crops have matured, they have harvested and sent for pre-processing during which carbon dioxide is emitted. The treated plant material is then converted into cellulose before being transferred to a processing unit.

In the next stage, the cellulose is processed into sugars. Microorganisms are subsequently added to ferment these sugars, producing ethanol. The finished biofuel is then used to power different forms of transport, including cars, trucks and aircraft. As ethanol is burned, carbon dioxide is released into atmosphere. Addition emissions also occur during the pre processing stage. However, this carbon dioxide is absorbed by growing plants through photosynthesis, therefore
