The diagram below shows how a biofuel called ethanol is produced.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the Production of a biofuel called ethanol
Overall, the ethanol is produced by many steps it's starts with the plants getting harvested and ends with the ethanol kept in in cars and airplanes and they are what we get from carbon dioxide to start the process once more.
The ethanol is made by first harvesting plants and tress which are grown using energy(sunlight and carbon dioxide).then the plants get crushed into small pieces to be out as cellulose. They are then taken transformed to a science lab to work on it.
After the science worker finish their processing which is then turned out to be sugar they start adding some microbes to the Suger to produce the ethanol which is bought by car makers to put them in cars so that they produce for us carbon dioxide which helps trees and plants to grow and repeat the process again and again.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the ethanol production process, from harvesting to final use. However, the description is somewhat simplistic and lacks the analytical detail required for a higher band. For instance, the transition from 'cellulose' to 'sugar' is described vaguely as 'transformed to a science lab', which misses the technical nature of the process shown in the diagram. While the main features are identified, the response would benefit from a more precise description of the chemical or mechanical stages (e.g., fermentation or distillation) to better reflect the information provided in the visual prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which provides a basic structure. However, the logical flow is occasionally hindered by informal phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'first', 'then', and 'after', they are used in a somewhat mechanical way. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where 'they' is used without a clear antecedent. To improve, you should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and academic tone expected in an IELTS report. Phrases like 'science worker' and 'work on it' are too informal and imprecise for describing a technical process. There are also some issues with word choice, such as 'turned out to be sugar' and 'kept in in cars'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more specific terminology related to industrial processes, such as 'conversion', 'fermentation', or 'raw materials', and avoid colloquial expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'it's starts with', 'plants and tress', and 'Suger'. There are also issues with punctuation and article usage, such as 'in in cars'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic spelling and article errors would significantly improve your score.
